“If anybody can give support with any soccer equipment please help!" That’s how I took notice of a small group of boys between 8-22 years from our local village 'The Oaks' here in Limpopo, South Africa in January 2020.
The team call themselves 'Mabushi Football Academy.' Coach Lucas Mpe Masete told me at our first meeting: “Claudia, these boys love to play football and I try to keep them out of trouble with our daily training so that they don't get bored and get in contact with drugs or crime!”
I was impressed with his vision and mind-set and wanted to help the team to make their biggest dream of finding a sponsor for proper soccer equipment during 2020 come true.
Right from the beginning I told them they have to do it themselves. I will support with the right ideas but the boys have to do the work by themselves. However, before we could start Covid-19 arrived and the boys were not allowed to go to school and nor play football!
Lucas and I started to get worried that during these Covid-19 times the kids would head down the wrong path, but we came up with a fabulous idea. We started a small veggie-garden and the boys got special training in how to grow veggies in an area like The Oaks Village with lots of rock and little water. But this of course with social distancing!
Almost every day they came to the garden as you can see on the pictures and about three month later we started harvesting and selling. The veggies went towards the food-parcel-program of our non profit organisation 'Claudia Cares NPC.'
Mission Impossible, like some people called our idea, turned into Mission Success! With a little extra help from some of our friends and our NPO, we managed to get some funding together for two coloured sets of team-shirts, so the boys can start training again in their new shirts during Level 2 Lockdown.
However now I realised that most of the boys come to training each day with sandals, worn through sneakers or some even in socks or bare foot to the training grounds. Now we are confronted with the second challenge; to find a sponsor to support our team of kids with proper soccer boots.
Our garden is still growing and we are waiting for the next harvest, but it will take us a long time to grow enough cabbage and spinach to finally buy those needed boots. Some of the veggies still go towards our food parcel program during Covid-19, which still goes on as was the deal.
The football team came up with the next idea to collect rubbish and recycling in and around the village and swap for remuneration at the collection depot. Yes, there is a lot to collect, and if you have been on this side of the planet you know what I’m talking about! So I’m actually very proud of the kids to come up with such an awesome idea and to work really hard to reach their next goal.
We have set up this donation page to help the Football team on their way to new boots. If these boys have inspired you to donate and help them along then this page is for you. This young team is working hard to get themselves to their goal but we can certainly reward their hard work by speeding the process up a little!
Donation’s can be done directly here on the GoGetFunding platform or alternatively through our Non Profit Organisation www.claudia-cares.com. You will also find more information and details of the team on our website.
We count on you!!!
