FORD’S BETTER-IDEAS FUND: Hovercraft Steering

In summary, the project’s rationale is that current hovercraft steering designs should be improved and that such improvements can significantly advance the hovercraft industry.The project aims to create an experimental model with that demonstrates proof-of-concept for an improved design.These improvements can then be applied to new or existing crafts.

The project’s objectives are defined thusly:

• Apply for patent(s) pending,
• Create the product portfolio and marketing tools,
• Salvage & refurbish the necessary parts,
• Assemble prototype,
• Test prototype,
• Approach companies with proof-of-concept. Agreements for Idea Submission and Non-Disclosure are required.

Specific Aims:The improved steering design, which is more user-friendly, will reduce turn radius & distance, produce higher speeds, as well as increase altitudes by 4 to 8 inches on existing ground models.Companies will then be able to license & manufacture the steering system for use in their hovercrafts.The steering design will also be applied to other means of transport, such as John L. Ford’s HOVERCAR®.

Background and Significance:At any speed, current hovercrafts designs require too much distance and have a wide turn radius.This project will demonstrate how to increase steering capability and provide better maneuverability by reducing the turn radius & decreasing the distance required to complete a turn.

Preliminary data from prototype testing will measure turn radius and distance to track improvements against existing models.Improvements in altitude will also be measured.
