Our Nan, Beryl Mawditt is a special lady. She is married to our Granddad Roy.
Together they have three children Karen, Natalie and Andrew, ten grandchildren
Jodie, Leah, Zoe, Ryan, Libby, Sam, Mark, Emma, Callum and Harlie and three
great-grandchildren Josh, Lily and Layla. They centre their lives around their family.
Nan was one of the longest members of staff to work at AP Burt’s in Potishead, and
is well known and loved by all of those who have worked with her. Nan retired from
work Christmas 2010 at the age of 71 still living a very active life.

Tragically on the 28th June 2011 Nan had an accident which resulted in her falling
from standing position. Nan was found collapsed on the ground unresponsive by our
Granddad. Jodie’s boyfriend Luke performed CPR which ultimately saved Nan’s life.
Nan was in a coma for 9 days, and remained in intensive care for 4 months. She
then moved to a high dependency ward before her journey to Salisbury Spinal Unit.
Nan’s sustained an incomplete quadriplegia as she has a C2 Odontoid fracture
– 2nd highest possible fracture in your neck. Whilst in intensive care Nan was
transferred to Frenchay for an operation to stabilise her injury to her neck. Due to the
level of injury Nan will remain ventilated for life, for this she has a tracheotomy. Nan
also has limited movement and will require a wheelchair also for life.

However....

Throughout this journey Nan has NEVER given up, she has remained so determined
to make progress. It has taken a year of intensive physiotherapy to support Nan to
be able to lift her hand up to her face so that she can now scratch an itch she may
have, and wipe her nose if it runs (which it frequently does) however during the first
year she was unable to do this.

Nan began taking a few steps whilst in Salisbury which is something that the physio
at the care home where Nan currently is has not given up on. Nan is able to hold
on to a Zimmer frame and walk with the support of 3 staff members – 2 either side
holding Nan and 1 in front.

Everyone who has met Nan during the time of her hospitalisation has said they have
never met anyone who is as determined as she is, people love working with her and
comment on how lovely she is.

Nan and Granddad’s house has been adapted for her so that she can come home
with 24 hour care, with two lifts, one indoor and one outdoor, and a wetroom.
However we have been told that the community physio’s will only see Nan on a
weekly basis for a limited time. This will not be enough to enable Nan to continue her
to improve her movement and reduce the pain she has. Nan and Granddad have
had to use their savings to contribute to the adaptations of their house; therefore
private physio costs are something that they will not be able to access.

So Leah, Zoe’s boyfriend Russ, Sam, Emma and Emma’s fiancée Ollie are going
to be running the Bath Half Marathon 3rd March 2013 so to raise money for Nan to
access physiotherapy. This will be the start of on going fundraising to ensure Nan
can continue to fight as she has been.

We will never give up on Nan as she has not given up on us.

We are asking kindly for donations to sponsor us for private physio for when Nan
comes home.

Thank you very much
