The safe injection site in Kitchener that was fought for by blood and tears by the Dealing with Drugs as a Social Issue has finally been approved by the city, in parternership with social services, and after many struggles including physical attacks from right wing hate-groups, lack of funding, and the crushing force of poverty that can kill poor people who use and don't use drugs.
One of the leaders of this effort, Julian Ichim, is facing criminal charges for having engaged in this activity. These charges are continuously evolving and changing, requiring multiple retainer fees (for every time new charges are laid) and bail money, adding up to expensive legal fees that are very damaging for someone who lives under the poverty line. When faced with decisions between paying legal fees or basic needs, legal fees win.
Please help with these expenses as we expect the state who recently had to drop some charges to come back up with them, as well as new fees from document requests, representation and consultation.
