Be Baby Dos’s SuperHEARo

First off, I want to thank everyone taking the time to read this. I am Ujean Ann, Baby Dos's mom.

My son, Ujuan Laurent, 1 year, 6 months, is diagnosed with Bilateral - Profound Hearing Loss since birth. During the Otoacoustic Emissions Screening (OAE)/Newborn Hearing Screening Test, he failed for his both ears. We were advised to wait up until his 2 months to retake the test. However, he then again failed. We went to a big hospital for the new test which was Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) and Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) to further evaluate his hearing ability, through this test, if hearing loss is present, the audiologist will be able to determine both type and degree of hearing loss. We then received the saddest result of our baby could not hear. And just like any other parent, we were in denial at first. We prayed really hard that maybe one day, miraculously, he’d hear us like how a normal baby does. It breaks our heart to see my son couldn’t hear the good sounds the world has to offer. As his parents, we know we have to do something. We’ve gone through those test and was informed that our son, is also a candidate for a Cochlear Implant. This implant is our last resort which we cannot afford.

Doctor advised us that he can wear a hearing aid for 6 months. Currently, Ujuan is renting his pair of hearing aids for the last 3 months. He was also able to finish the first 3 months of his Speech Therapy. Unfortunately, anything related to his disability isn't covered under our medical card. None of his medical appointments related to his hearing loss are covered. As per the Doctor, after 6 months we need to decide if we will proceed with the process. Implanting Ujuan could have solve his hearing problem, enabling him to develop speech, learn and grow up as a fully abled member of society. Will give him access to sound which will provide him with the only chance of age-appropriate speech and language development. This will provide him the opportunity to a better education and independent employment as an adult in the future. If any of you are familiar with the cost of hearing aids, you know that they are very expensive. Renting a set of hearing aids can cost up to P12,000. While the speech sessions every 3 months cost P19,000. He is not enrolled at the moment because of lack of funds.

Anyone who knows Ujuan knows that he is a sweet and a happiest little boy with a big attitude. Just like everyone else, we want to give him the best possible future there is.

This costly process of Cochlear implant includes purchase of 2 implants, cost of surgery itself and long rehabilitation which may take as long as years – total costs exceeding (P2M)

The costs involved for one (1) cochlear Implant Device is roughly P800,000. Goal of this campaign is to raise (P1M) to cover at least one ear of Ujuan’s implants and surgery costs.

Fortunately, doctors guarantee that after treatment, Ujuan will finally be able to play with his older brother Unno and hear us singing. Every single donation is a step for our dear baby Ujuan to hear the world.
