Mat's Battle with Stage 4 Cancer

The kind of person who’s afraid of needles and blood is now facing one of her fears to live.

Being a single mom, I am now fighting my sickness so that I can spend more years with my son and family.

I had symptoms last year of having blood in my poop which initially I thought was only due to my hemorrhoids but when I went to see a specialist and was advised to undergo a colonoscopy and CT Scan. My gastroenterologist gave the worst news anyone will ever want to hear, you have cancer.

I was diagnosed last August 04, 2023, with Stage IV Rectal Cancer. I was immediately referred to a surgeon and oncologist so that treatment would start as soon as possible. The surgeon wanted the tumor in my liver to reduce its size and number before he could perform the surgery.

I am now undergoing a combination chemotherapy of IV and oral medication to manage the tumors in my rectum and liver.

I was advised to have radiation therapy of 25 cycles to remove the obstruction in my rectum area, they needed to reduce the size of my tumor.

The daily radiation I received made my body weaker and my blood count dropped specifically red blood cells and platelets. I lost weight from 90-70 kgs.

I was admitted to the hospital for 3 days to transfuse 3 bags of blood and needed to be hooked to an oxygen tank as I was having breathing difficulties.

My family and I are constantly facing financial challenges as the treatment is quite expensive. My chemotherapy (a combination of Intravenous and oral chemodrugs) is continuous to manage the tumor and to prevent it from spreading to other organs and to help reduce the tumors in my liver.

Surgery is still an option and a big chunk of money will be needed.

I still have a long way to go for my treatment and I know God is bigger than my sickness and He will always provide for my needs through people with a big heart who are willing to help.
