Basti is a warrior! Brave Basti!
Sebastian La Torre Corleto or Basti for short was born on September 26, 2014. He is three and a half years old and was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) last March in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Prior to his diagnosis he had on and off fever for a week and his stomach was getting bigger. We had also noticed that he was getting more and more bruises.
Last March 17, 2018 while we were playing in front of the house, we noticed that he was very pale and he was easy to get tired. We phoned our pediatrician and he suggested that we have his blood tested. Upon doing several tests at the E.R. at around 12noon (Blood test and C.T. Scan) they saw that his hemoglobin and thrombosite count was way below the normal levels. They had ruled out dengue and internal bleeding and based on the blood tests the doctors were leaning more towards the likelihood of Leukemia.
We were admitted into the hospital at approximately 9.30pm that same day. By this time, his hemoglobin and thrombosite counts were at almost critical levels and needed immediate blood transfusion. He was given his first bag of the blood transfusion at 5am the following day.
We are based in Jakarta, Indonesia and my wife and I had decided to fly back home to the Philippines for Basti’s medical treatment. After a few days of meds and blood transfusions in Jakarta, Basti was finally cleared by the doctors in Jakarta to be fit enough to fly home.
On March 23, we took a flight out of Jakarta and upon landing, headed straight to the hospital in the Philippines. We are now currently confined in the hospital since then. We had sought out a second opinion regarding Basti’s condition in the Philippines and this was were it was really confirmed that he has B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
His disease causes him to have an abnormal production of blood cells. He is not able to produce the right amounts of red blood (hemoglobin), platelets (thrombosite) and white blood cells. Thus making him very susceptible to infection, bleeding and bruising. He has started to undergo chemotherapy and blood transfusions. Due to his condition, his blood count has to be monitored very closely.
This whole ordeal has taken a great toll on our family both emotionally and financially. The doctors said that the treatments will last for approximately a little bit more than 4-5 years. We want to give our brave little boy a fighting chance to beat this leukemia disease and let him live a full life. At the moment we have already spent over $12,000 and the bills keep on piling up. We knock on you’re kind hearts to help us give Basti a chance to live a full life.

Basti just finished his RECONSOLIDATION phase and is now recovering before starting his MAINTENANCE phase. He will still have regular blood testing and by next week, he will have his BONE MARROW ASPIRATION procedure. We still have 2. . . . .

Update posted by Priscila La Torre at 11:14 pmToday, Basti had a scheduled chemo treatment and blood test. After today’s treatment and blood results, his blood counts were found to be low again. We were asked to monitor his condition for any infection(fever) or signs of weakness and we will repeat blood test on Thursday. Please continue to

His blood counts are good and his chemotherapy treatment is at a point where it is at a recovery phase. Doctors advised us to go to a mall early in the morning during opening time and pick. . . . .

From low blood counts that needed more blood transfusion to infection and now fever and cough that needed more antibiotics.
