ABOUT THE PROJECT
Deep into a moment of crisis in Brazilian politics, with rising religious intolerance and minority persecution, supporting the Arts in its endeavour to tell stories that preserve and echo the local culture is a way of partaking in the country's aesthetical and political resistance.
THE FILM
"Barravento" (lit. "The Turning Wind"; fiction; 15') tells the story of a remote village that has been getting progressively swallowed by the rising sea level. It's when the water first reaches Naína's house – an ancient "Terreiro" (a religious temple) in her community, that is no longer in use – that the protagonist sees herself forced to face her destiny, reuniting with the water deity Yemoja.
The short film is syncretic, mixing Yoruba mythology, Greek mythology, tradition, destiny, fear and the heroine's trajectory through rites and meetings with entities of religions with African origins. Everything carries an epic tone of fantastic-realism.
WHY TO SUPPORT
"Barravento" shows strong aspects of Brazilian culture, as well as it values rites and symbols of religions with African origins, specially Candomblé. Moreover, the story stars black women and the crew is composed majoritarily of women.
A DIALOGUE BETWEEN GENERATIONS
"Barravento" is also an open dialogue with Bahian filmmaker Glauber Rocha's first feature film, released in 1962 under the same name. Glauber was one of the biggest names in Brazilian New Cinema and his "Barravento" revolved around fishermen and a conflict in which religion was seen as a social alienating factor.
What our "Barravento" intends to do is to set a dialogue with Glauber's piece, but this time with female protagonists and treating religion as a form of resistance.
WHO WE ARE
The idea for this movie has been in development for the past two years. This is an independent production. Behind the cameras are young Brazilians who believe in Art as a means of resistance.
We have already shot the first part of the movie in a city within the state of Rio de Janeiro that is being swallowed by the sea. Now we are using our networks to help fund the renting of equipment, transportation and food for the second half of the movie.
