Save our Small Businesses

Update posted by Barking Mad Team On Nov 16, 2018

Ok. So the meeting went really well. They were very open to our thoughts and were genuinely shocked at the disparity across LA's regarding interpretation of the regs, fees and the double and triple fees across the 2 and 3 year licences. They are going to go away and look at all the above and take it up with the LA's.

We have got halls and bathrooms allowed as designated rooms. There will be criteria to meet, size etc but they are allowing those rooms. They will add over 16's bedrooms to the guidelines so it is in black and white for LA's. They will allow room dividers/stair gates to be used, but again will have to meet certain criteria ie the minimum space to be used and height of divider. They are going to look at the star rating system again (they all admitted they wouldn't use a 2* rated business so can see how unfair it is). 9 sqm is going to be reduced to 6sq m. They are going to look into advertising to educate the public on licenses and thereby helping to drive out unlicensed operators. The RSPCA said they already have been doing this but I told her neither Suzi nor I have seen anything. It was briefly touched on that the 4 dogs would be amended to 6 but I can not confirm this.
They have given us an estimate of 1-2 weeks to get new guidelines out. ANYBODY ALREADY INSPECTED CAN ASK FOR A REVISIT, AT NO COST, FOR THEIR LICENCE TO BE AMMENDED.
We didn't get to crates but will follow up in an email.
They wouldn't budge on conservatories for the reasoning that if the heating/air con fails and a dog is in there for 3 hours it could die.
We didn't get to number of own dogs being counted as one for licence numbers but we will follow up on that too.
We know there will still be people not happy but it's a great start and we now have an MP fighting with us too.

For those of you that don't know yet, Marie and Suzi (members of Team Barking Mad) have been asked to meet DEFRA in London to discuss our concerns. We as a team feel that they should not be left out of pocket for this trip on our behalf. As such we will be using some of these funds, so generously donated by yourselves, to cover their travel expenses.
