Barefoot Burnsy for Cambodia

Update posted by Philip Burns On Jun 02, 2013

Barefoot update:

6 days til Cambodia. BAREFOOTING OFFICIALLY OVER!!! With just under a week to go, June brings the option (yes, the mere option) of choosing shoes over bare soles. But I have fallen in love with barefooting so the hobbit lifestyle may just stick for good.

A massive thank you to everyone who has donated, people have been incredibly generous (and curious!) about the Barefoot for Cambodia cause. Here's a rundown of donations:

- £440 raised over the internet
- £265.10 raised face-to-face
- £550 previously donated for flights (pre-barefooting)
- £1,000 donated last Friday by single donor thoroughly curious about my bare feet!
- £5,000 donated by single donor directly to Feed My Lambs charity in Cambodia after the bare feet sparked interest.

Grand total raised = £7,255.10. Not bad for just taking your shoes off...

'Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."... (Jesus answered...) Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these... And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.'
- John 14:8-14

Thank you, God.

Barefoot update: 9 days til Cambodia. My penultimate day of barefooting and I must confess, I have been wearing footwear for certain sporting occasions. Yesterday's surf outing warranted a pair of neoprene boots... hey, what? The sea is still freezing despite the glorious sunshine! Gimme a break! Thoroughly looking forward to putting shoes back on. This barefooting lark is good but sometimes you just don't want to rock the hobbit look and endure continuous discomfort. Gravel, I appreciate your uses but we are no longer friends. Two more days to donate over my website if you haven't already! https://gogetfunding.com/project/barefoot-burnsy-for-cambodia And here's a very good BBC3 documentary on sex trafficking in Cambodia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtO9pebV-ok

Barefoot update:

11 days til Cambodia... And three days until I officially put shoes back on! What should I do to celebrate? Paint my feet with Cambodia flags? Get everyone to join me for a day of barefooting? Throw some suggestions at me, people!

Here's a video at the Agape Training Centre, one of the organisations we're working with in Cambodia:

Barefoot update:

19 days til Cambodia. The man-flu has subsided and the barefooting has been resumed, huzzah! People have been incredibly generous in their donations so far, both online and in person. Our team busked and sold lemonade on Portstewart Promenade yesterday evening, raising more money that we can give to the organisations out in Cambodia, and awareness of sex trafficking and slavery.

Please watch this short trailer for a documentary explaining what we're fighting against:

And please keep donating! We want to give as much as possible to the people on the front line out in Cambodia. Even £10 goes much further out there than it does here.

On the topic of barefooting, check out this charity that teaches the trade of shoemaking to people in Uganda...

They took their inspiration from this video:

Barefoot update:

26 days til Cambodia. After standing for an hour at a silent vigil against human traffiking in Northern Ireland, I've been struck with the dreaded INFLUENZA (*gasps*). Now I'm nursing a chesty cough and a fever. It seems that barefooters ought to be made of sturdier stuff than this...

Please donate!

I'm completely barefoot now for a whole month until Saturday 1st June, one week before the team leaves for Cambodia. I tactically chose May as the month because of the (usually) more pleasant weather; having occasionally barefooted back in January in the snow, this was a decision made from experience. Alas, the weather remains thoroughly inconsiderate of my temporary status of 'barefoot citizen'. It hailed recently as I was going for a 'training walk' up the road. The little icy brutes pounded my poor feet, but at least the oncoming drivers had something to chuckle at!

Please donate what you can and support me every step of the way.

(No forgiveness of puns needed. If you have any foot puns, send them my way!)

You're doing a grand job! Barefooting isn't always easy but it is always worthwhile, especially when done in support of a good cause! Good lad yourself!
