Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
On November 1, Typhoon Rolly made landfall in Bicol with sustaining winds of up to 220-315 kmph. It was the strongest tropical cyclone observed worldwide in 2020 and one of the most intense on record.
The category 5 Typhoon obliterated several parts of Camarines Sur and its surroundings, which resulted in the crippling of infrastructure. After the typhoon, it was reported that approximately 26,052 homes are completely damaged and 159,497 are partially damaged. Many schools, hospitals, crops and livelihoods were also destroyed, leaving a total of 1,317,662 people affected.
I was in Camsur after the typhoon for relief efforts, and was amazed to witness how people began clearing the roads and salvaging what was left of their homes the very next day. But only 11 days after larger towns got electricity and water back, Camsur was hit once again by Typhoon Ulysses. As of this moment, we do not have updated numbers on houses and families affected and in need of help but based on the long hours of strong winds and heavy rainfall, the numbers above are now much larger.
I'm sure by now people have once again begun trying to rebuild, however the little money that they have left is going towards feeding their families and therefore they don’t have the funds to buy the necessary materials to rebuild their homes. This is where we come in.
We are looking to raise money to fund relief efforts, as each family will need up to 100,000 pesos (US$2,000) to build a disaster resilient home. All donations will go towards buying the necessary materials for families to be able to do this.
We are asking anyone who is able to please donate whatever you can, as any amount would be helpful towards rebuilding the lives and homes of so many.
