BAHARI HURU

Bahari Yetu, Uhai Wetu (Our ocean, our lives).

The ocean is crying, she is choking from the litter we throw in her. The plastic we carelessly dispose off finds its way in the oceans affecting marine life, tourism and the quality of food that arrives at our tables

Last year, I was so stunned by the amount of plastic litter that I noticed in Mombasa, along my regular route, that I decided to take photos to document, and was going to do a visual exhibit just to show people. I ended up pausing this, when I realized it was a bigger and complex undertaking which would need a bigger intervention. This litter ends up in our oceans. We risk our children knowing the beaches and ocean as a dumpsite.

In response to this problem, Jukwaa Arts will be implementing the year-long project, ‘Bahari Huru' that urges us to remember to bring back the life, and beauty of our ocean community.

With your support will bring together 6 local artists who will work with members of 5 communities, in urban Mombasa and rural Kilifi, to create provocative and interactive performances and art installations that speak out against ocean pollution, ignite conversations, and challenge us to take action.

About Us

Jukwaa Arts is a theatre company based in Mombasa Kenya. We are a creative greenhouse that voices social issues through creation and presentation of performing and visual arts. Through community theatre, street art installations and artist’ hangouts we trigger conversations on pertinent social issues and injustices affecting our community.

Some key activities include

• Community activation using theatre performing arts and visual arts.
• Live performances & visual media exhibition
• Public art installations
• Beach clean-up parties

Objectives of the Project

• To trigger conversations on the vice that is ocean pollution along the Kenyan coast.
• To create a communication bridge between the community and policy makers in order to create relevant and sustainable solutions to ocean pollution.
• To actively engage community response by mirroring their actions on ocean pollution to allow them to reflect and find local solutions to the vice.
• Celebrate the marine environment and emphasize its importance in sustaining our livelihoods.

Audience

The project centers both the urban community residing in Mombasa who play a major role in littering the oceans as well as the rural community in Kilifi who rely on the ocean for livelihood. These communities will collaboratively raise a voice on the importance of curbing ocean pollution.
