Centre for Batwa Minorities Uganda is a local ngo that is protecting and promoting the rights of the Batwa community in South western Uganda. This organisation was started in 2011 to address the social injustices that are being faced by this ethnic minority group. Studies have shown that this group has been discriminated in all aspects of life. The Batwa have survived over the years through their ability to hunt in the forests for their food and grow crops on a small scale. This group of people have suffered displacements and resettlement in different places and at different intervals which has created disgruntlement within the Batwa community. By 1991 the Batwa were forced to leave the forests as they were being gazetted for a national game park. The Batwa were forced to live within the majority ethnic group known as the Bakiga. The Batwa people constantly struggle to acquire education, health care and security. Studies have also shown that most of the Batwa children drop out of school in primary because of lack of funds.

We are also encouraging the parents to be more involved in the education of their children so that the children are encouraged to read hard and be very successful. Most especially we are trying to sensitize the parents to ensure that the girls complete their education instead of having them married off at an early age.

Centre for Batwa Minorities is working closely with the families in Kanungu districts to ensure that education for the Batwa children is made a priority. The biggest challenge that this ethnic minority group face is the fact that they cannot support their children, even if the Government school provide free education, they cannot afford to buy the requirements for their children. Studies have further shown that out of the 646 Batwa people living in Kanungu district 342 are between the ages of 1- 17.
