I gave birth to Zaffrina, a healthy baby girl last year and she was a bundle of pure joy. Everything was well with her for the next three months, but I noticed that her skin was becoming jaundiced after that. I had her checked right away and we were referred to a hepatologist. We were adviced to have a biopsy and she was diagnosed with Neonatal Hepatitis which is an “inflammation of the liver that occurs only in early infancy, usually between one and two months after birth.”

Zaff underwent medication for 6 months, but did not get well. Her hepatitis continued into being a chronic liver disease which is Biliary Atresia, a rare disease of the liver and bile ducts that occurs in infants.

Cells within the liver produce liquid called bile. Bile helps to digest fat. It also carries waste products from the liver to the intestines for excretion. This network of channels and ducts is called the biliary system. When the biliary system is working the way it should, it lets the bile drain from the liver into the intestines. Unfortunately for my Zaff, her biliary system is blocked thus trapping the bile inside her liver. If left untreated, this disease would further damage and scar her liver.

Even before the results were released, Zaff has already exhibited the symptoms of Biliary Atresia. She was jaundiced – her eyes and skin were very yellow. She had dark urine and this is caused by the build up of bilirubin (a breakdown product from hemoglobin) in the blood. Her stool was also clay-colored and sometimes had blood in it and this occurs because no bile or bilirubin coloring is emptied into her intestines. She also showed no signs of weight gain for so many months and she has very slow body development. She is more than a year old now but she still cannot sit on her own and her two frontal teeth have just grown very recently.

We are still blessed, after all, for Zaff is not yet experiencing and severe symptoms of Biliary Atresia such as abdominal bloating and internal bleeding, but this is not enough reason for us not to act now. We are going to need to prepare at least 2.5 million pesos for the liver transplant and the post transplant procedures. The surgery shall be done in India for it is way cheaper in there than here in the Philippines. Zaff’s tiny yet dysfunctional liver shall be replaced with a graft from a living donor. We are hoping that the procedure will be done at the soonest time possible for time is a luxury that we do not have. With everyday that passes, Zaff’s illness is getting ahead of her.

We are trying to be up-to-date with precautionary medications but there are still a lot of work ups and test that needs to be donw. She is having close check ups, but not often. Most tests as preparation for her surgery have not yet been done for Zaff. The expenses are too high, making it hard for us to act upon the situation thus leading us into asking people for help.

I am pleading to you as a mother who only wants to extend her daughter’s life. I am knocking on the door of your hearts to take some time to hear us out and help us by donating any amount that you can. A little goes a long way. We will be forever indebted to you and live in gratitude for your help. Please help us give my Zaff a chance in life.

Please include Baby Zaff in your prayers. We all look forward to the day when she will be able to thank all of you for helping her win her battle against biliary atresia. May you continue to allow God’s goodness to touch your hearts and help contribute in helping Zaff win this fight.
