A baby is a blessing. Hence, when we realised we were pregnant with our first baby - Ethan Luis Bautista Lacno, my husband and I can't contain our happiness. We were in awe. It was a mixture of nerves, excitement, anticipation (also, a touch of mood swings) and nothing else but pure happiness. What many say is true that you will never understand some things until you experience them yourself. A new reason to be excited to wake up every morning and a new meaning to the concept of beauty. I was blessed enough that my pregnancy went as smooth as possible.

But February 24 happened...

Due to complications in the delivery room, Ethan suffered Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS) which occurs when meconium is inhaled by the newborn, completely blocking the baby's airways. And in Ethan's case, the doctor advised that the meconium went straight to Ethan's lungs, leaving only a tiny portion without meconium. How come the doctors are telling me that Ethan only has 50/50 chance of survival? How can this happen? Why him? It was devastating, confusing and most of all, heartbreaking to see Ethan fight to live at a very young age. The light fades into darkness as he slowly deteriorates. The joy of seeing him everday slowly became a struggle and traumatic. But Ethan's ways of showing he was fighting were more than enough to encourage us to fight even harder and keep holding on to the idea that one day he will be free from the countless meds, tubes, injections and other pain. However, fate did not go easy on us. Ethan's saturation rate started to fluctuate from 40, 89, 42 while our hearts yearns for his survival. Unfortunately, he did not pick up but instead more complications arose, he started to develop internal hemorrhage and his kidneys are shutting down. And after two weeks, our greatest fear came. After squeezing my fingers and giving us his most unique 'beautiful eyes' to say "Mama and Papa, I am here, I am fighting", his tiny body slowly let go and left us to be with our Creator in a so much better place. As much as we don't want to give up, we cannot see Ethan suffer any further. We earned an angel; our little warrior - Ethan Luis Bautista Lacno.

Two weeks were not enough. Two weeks were surely a very short time compared to the long months of anticipation and a lifetime of dreams. Our eyes may be filled with tears, our mind with questions and our hearts with pain, one thing is for sure, however, Ethan touched our lives in many remarkable ways, so please allow him to touch yours as well.

And now we are knocking on your doors, asking for your kind support. Any amount will be of great help to pay the remaining hospital bills.
