At 24 weeks gestation we were told our precious little baby had been identified as having a congenital heart defect. At this... time no actual diagnosis was given, except that there was no pulmonary artery and there was a large ventricular septal defect.

We then started the long journey of meeting with many doctors and a cardio thoracic surgeon from Children's Hospital in Omaha. The doctors had multiple plans set up for delivery due to my history of delivering my first child prematurely.

On August 1st we began our journey of Abel's birth, this was nearly 3 weeks preterm. After contractions began that would not stop and labor was inevitably beginning, we were flown to Lincoln, NE. Early that next morning Abel was born and within hours he was transported to the Children's Hospital in Omaha, NE.

Abel had his first heart catheterization on August 7th which gave us the official diagnosis of pulmonary atresia, VSD and MAPCAS. In short, there is a hole in between the two ventricles, no pulmonary artery to his lungs, and little arteries from the back of the aorta are going to the lungs to help supply his body with oxygen.

On August 8th, Abel underwent his first surgery to have a shunt placed in his heart to help some of the little arteries grow until he can have a large heart repair done. This was just one of the many surgeries, heart caths and follow ups Abel will have to undergo.

We were blessed to be able to take Abel home on Tuesday August 18th. Abel has had several follow-up doctor appointments already.

Abel now weighs 7 pounds and is drinking small amounts out of a bottle and the rest of his feedings are provided through a nasogastric tube that goes down his nose to his stomach for feedings. He is getting better at eating thru the bottle.

Currently we are waiting for Abel to get bigger before his major heart surgery. In between now and then, there will be many follow up trips to Omaha, NE so his heart shunt and his growth can be monitored.

Thank to everyone for all of the prayers, and please continue to keep our little Abel in your prayers.
