Hello !

We are a couple of asylum seekers from Cameroon with a young baby of 10 months living in Athens as we wait for our papers. We call on supportive persons around the world to help us collect the 850€ to pay our rent and stay off the streets.

Our Situation

We were victims of political violence and persecution in our home country, and in order to survive we were forced to leave. Despite this, the greek asylum services did not take into account all the relevant information regarding the dangers we faced, nor our medical needs due to the chronic health issues we face, nor the birth of our baby ten months ago, and rejected our claim for international protection. We were also scammed by a private lawyer in Athens who did not show up to represent us in court for our appeal. Our case was processed and rejected abnormally quickly, within less than a year, which is unusual and reflects the negligence that asylum services demonstrated in considering our application. Our asylum claim having been unjustly rejected, we do not receive any support from the Greek state ; neither money, nor accommodation, nor social nor legal help. We are searching for work to sustain ourselves, however the economic situation in Greece, the restrictions related to Coronavirus, and our legal situation prevent us from finding a source of income.

With the help of supportive persons in Athens, we were able to report the negligence of the administration in treating our case, the fact that their decision was based on incomplete information, and to restart our asylum procedure. However, these procedures are extremely slow and over the past few months, we have been homeless, and we have stayed in inadequate housing without water or electricity. Since January, we have been living in a small, crowded flat, but we do not have the money to pay our rent of 170€ per month for the three of us. We are four months behind, and we are at high risk of eviction. We have until end of April to pay the money that we owe, which is 850€.

We call on your support to keep our accommodation and stay off the streets until we can be officially recognised as asylum seekers again, and receive the State support to which we are entitled.

WONDERFUL NEWS!

Update posted by Genevieve Cartilier at 05:26 pm

I don't believe in magic, but there is no other way to describe the wonderful thing that happened today. By sharing our family's story on the "One Human Race" Facebook group, their case came to the attention of "Everyday Courage", a project which among other actions in Athens provides shelter. . . . .

Dad is taken to hospital after suffering from stroke

Update posted by Genevieve Cartilier at 11:33 am

On Tuesday night, A, the father, had a small stroke and was taken to hospital by ambulance. His high blood pressure has been a source of concern for the last few years, and the treatment he follows cannot compensate for the high levels of stress he experiences on a daily. . . . .
