In South Africa, individuals who are diagnosed with mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar, etc., but who are still functional have nowhere to go once discharged. Existing facilities are few and very expensive, charging R20 000 per month. As a mother who has to take care of my son who has schizophrenia, I know how difficult it is to ensure he takes his medication, engages in stimulating activities and manages his daily routine under caring supervision. He does not require institutional care provided in a typical mental health facility as he can exercise a fair degree of independence but does require assistance and supervision. He is also non violent so does not pose a threat to himself or the general community.

After struggling for five years to find a place that is reasonable and stimulating, I have not found any.I need to solve my own problem and that of many other South Africans by establishing a center for assisted living that is cheaper, family like, self sustainable and healing. It is envisaged that the residents of the assisted living centre will engage in farming and manufacturing activities for commercial purposes to reduce the cost to families. It is envisaged that the center will offer the following services:

  • Round the clock access to care and supervision by qualified staff;
  • Farming, manufacturing and other stimulating fun activities;
  • Supervised learning;
  • Private lodging;
  • Transport to activities or consultation with doctors and other specialists;
  • Supervised medication;
  • Meals

I am looking at buying a farm as a natural setting will be more condusive to healing and farming and manufacturing activities.

I commit to account for every cent raised and apply it only for the purpose explained above. Thank you in advance to each and everyone of you who contributes to this worthy and much needed intervention.
