Fundraising for Ashton's Medical Devices and Equipment, Medical costs and more

We are the proud parents of a strong Mito warrior, that need your help!

We need to raise funds for several medical devices, and associated costs, to help our son grow and develop. The items we require are all necessities, and is not covered by medical insurance / aid. The items we require are:

Ashton needs splints (AFO’s) for his feet as he cannot stand yet, and his feet need to be properly aligned and positioned with the splints. This needs to be cast to his feet and replaced as he develops and grows. One set of these comes to just under R 14 000.00. This needs to be replaced as his feet grows.

He also needs a seating solution in order for him to sit upright safely and interact with his peers at school. With his condition, he will be able to support his weight, and all of a sudden his muscles cannot sustain this, and this can cause him to fall over and hurt himself. It also helps his caregivers with including him in group activities. We found a suitable solution in the form of a GoTo2 seat with a support base, from Firefly. This costs just over R 20 000.00 for the seat and base

He also needs Gait trainer and standing frame to develop his muscles and getting him more interactive in his environment. We need this to have both Pelvic and trunk support and found the ideal solution in the Grillo Gait Trainer. This can be used in several ways, including mobile and stationary – filling the role of both the standing frame and the Gait trainer. This will fulfill most of his requirements for the next few years as this specific unit gives us 50 cm adjustment for growth. The gait trainer costs just under R 50 000.00.

We also require a stroller that can seat him and provide enough support and posture for him. As I am sure you can understand that most commercially available options are too small for his size, and it does not come with adequate support and is not beneficial for his development. We found an item called a Bug stroller, which can adapt and grow with him. The Bug comes to just under R 50 000.00. There are other options available as well, and we are looking into starting on a smaller version, but in the end we need to look at the bigger ones for the postural support.

He also needs a seating solution that can be used in the bath, in order for him to sit upright safely. We found a suitable solution in the form of a Splashy Seat, from Firefly. This costs just over R 20 000.00 for the seat and base.

The stroller can be fitted with an inflatable, re-mouldable posture piece to this which can be re-moulded as his body grows, but this is not a necessity, but will just cut back on costs in future, and provide better support than the foam cut out supports that can be made for the bug. This is, however, a pricey item coming in at around R 22 000.00. This however is last on the to do list!

In future we will have to look at augmented communication devices, a bath lift and other postural support items.

Any help towards any of the items will be greatly appreciated, and without your help, the items are plainly unaffordable.

Some great news!

Update posted by Lizanda Nel at 09:37 am

Some great news about Ashton devices! We have managed to secure a second hand wheelchair and had this adapted to suit his requirements. It is an ongoing upgrade, which will grow with him. Unfortunately we do not have a way to transport it, so for the time being it will. . . . .

Thank you very much for the support to date! It is highly appreciated! We are making good progress towards Ashton’s splints, but the list keeps growing! We now also need to purchase a wheelchair, which might replace the Bug stroller, or at the least push it to the back of the queue.. . . . .
