artHARARE 2022 will present multi layered hybrid event showcasing an expanded list of established, mid career and emerging contemporary artists focused on the medium of found objects and repurposed artworks. We are excited to be collaborating with artist spaces and partners in Harare to showcase some of the leading contemporary artists working in this medium.
artHARARE is an artist-run initiative that is dedicated to promoting and supporting the development of the contemporary arts scene in Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwean Diaspora. It has taken advantage of the adaptation of the art world to the digital space, and the rising interest in contemporary African art, by staging the previous two editions entirely online. Its main objectives are to be a dynamic platform engaged in the contemporary dialogue, and to promote the visual arts and artistic practices in Zimbabwe. In addition, it seeks to become the epicentre of contemporary art in Zimbabwe, encouraging and developing new art forms, networks and markets.
We believe that this project will bring value to the local art community by:
[1] creating a strong sense of community pride for local artists, and national pride for Zimbabwean artists in the Diaspora
[2] encouraging new audiences for Zimbabwean artists and continuing the development of international cultural engagement
[3] promoting dialogue and debate among artists and art professionals, encouraging new ideas, and providing opportunities to network
[4] introducing audiences to fresh, exciting and emerging art that may otherwise go unnoticed
[5] empowering local artists, creating new markets for their work and participating in the growing interest in contemporary African art by international art collectors
[6] bringing the unique skills and perspectives of high profile Zimbabweans in Zimbabwe, as well as those in the Zimbabwean Diaspora, to the community

The 2020 inaugural edition of artHARARE showcased over thirty leading artists living and working in Zimbabwe, South Africa, France, UK, Canada and the United Sates of America. These artists were selected by a panel of art professionals.
The 2021 edition ran under the theme “I sing No More Roses But Walk Through Harare Mazes”, a line taken from the late Zimbabwean novelist Dambudzo Marechera. artHARARE 2021 called on artists to respond to Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe, as a catalyst and incubator for relational aesthetics between art and the city and engagements with transitions and continuities in the city and their historicity. Thirty-one artists from varying disciplines exhibited presenting works resonating with multiple perspectives and constructs of a post-colonial city and its hybrid mix of culture, politics and modernity.
