Hi, my name is Chiah Hoong. Firstly, I want to thank you for taking the time to read my story. I first learned I had a congenital heart condition in 2000, when my doctor detected a heart murmur during a routine physical. I followed up with a cardiologist who suggested medication. Uncomfortable with the plan, I sought a second opinion and found a specialist who recommended close monitoring of the murmur instead. It wasn’t until 2021 that I was diagnosed with a leaky mitral valve, a condition that can put added stress on the heart. By late 2022, the condition had worsened, causing my heart to become enlarged as it worked harder to move blood between its chambers. My doctor recommended open-heart surgery to repair the valve before things become worse.

It was startling for me, as I never even noticed that I was already having symptoms. I had become accustomed to bouts of daily palpitations and feeling more tired, but attributed it to working in a stressful job and getting older.

“I’d wake up feeling like I really needed a cup of coffee to get going. It seemed like I could never catch up.”

“It just seemed like one thing after the next. You think you’re going to get this surgery and then you’ll be fine, but there were just so many things to deal with.”

Challenges that i need to face

Medical and surgical issues which require life-long follow up, regular check-ups and repeated investigations and evaluation

• Potential complications such as heart failure, abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) or pulmonary hypertension
• Risk to offspring that need to be discussed
• Risk of endocarditis and the need for antibiotic prophylaxis
• Social, emotional, financial, vocational, educational, psychological and lifestyle issues specific to each individual.

Diagnosis Explanation: What is severe left atrium dilation/severe dilated cardiomyopathy.

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition when the heart becomes enlarged and weak. In this condition, the heart muscle becomes stretched and thin. This causes the heart pump chambers to become enlarged or dilated. The stretched and enlarged heart becomes weak and is unable to pump blood normally. When the heart is unable to pump enough blood for the body’s needs, it could result in heart failure. 概述—

Diagnosis Explanation: What is severe mitral valve regurgitation.

The mitral valve is located between the left heart chambers (left atrium and left ventricle) and keeps blood flowing in the correct direction. Mitral regurgitation is a condition in which the mitral valve leaflets do not close tightly. When this happens, blood flows backward from the left ventricle into the left atrium. The heart must then work harder to push blood through the body, which can cause fatigue, shortness of breath and worsening heart failure.

There are several causes of mitral regurgitation and these include:

• Heart disease (such as heart attack), or other conditions that weaken the heart muscle
• Deterioration of valve tissue
