In July 2015, I had been diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), a type of kidney disorder caused by slow, cumulative and scarring of the tiny blood filters in the kidneys that help in removing waste products inside the blood. As a result, both my kidneys are incapable to fully filter out toxins, excess water, and electrolytes.

At this stage of my condition, the prognosis is that it’s already irreversible and can be progressive. For two years now, I’ve been undergoing hemodialysis, a treatment that serves as an artificial filtration system that removes waste and chemicals from my blood. Four hours a day, three times a week for the rest of my life.

Though thankful for this treatment, it is extremely difficult not only physically but financially as well. At the prime age of 37, I’m robbed of the freedom to live a normal life. My condition has deprived me of pursuing my professional career and cannot even carry out some daily tasks.

With this situation, I’m solely dependent on my parents since I have no definite source of income anymore. Both of them are retired senior citizens, and only have their monthly pension and draining retirement pay to compensate our family’s day-to-day expenses.

My Nephrologist strongly recommends that I should undergo a kidney transplant. This will not only free me from the struggle of undergoing a lifetime dialysis treatment, but also allow me to work, earn, and live a normal life again.

Fortunately, my younger sister, Bianca, is a good match as my kidney donor. However, a kidney transplant is a very expensive treatment – beyond what we can afford. The approximate cost given to us during our orientation at the National Kidney Transplant Institute for the procedure alone was PHP 1.7 million. And I would still be needing funds for the post-transplant medication which we were told was very costly too. With the family’s financial condition, we can barely afford the considerable amount to cover all the medical expenses.

I have always been a positive thinker, hoping for the best outcome in dealing with the cards I’ve been given. Our family has been through so much, with my condition and the recent passing of my older sister Tania who had Cancer, it has been a truly devastating and challenging journey. What I’m really hoping for is for us to have a fresh beginning. I believe we deserve to start “living” again.

And so, in hopes of minimizing our financial burdens, I am humbly reaching out to anyone who can to give a hand by means of kind donations.

Thank you very much. Hoping for the best.

Anton
