Anna’s Diagnosis

January 2018, first week of the year, She felt weak all the time, had body pains, headaches, paleness of skin and severe bone and joint pain that caused her to be rushed time to time to Emergency Room. These symptoms, though common, could be signs of mild to serious illness. After several trips to the hospital, a bone marrow biopsy confirmed a diagnosis that no one wanted to hear. Anna has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

This cancer affects the white blood cells wherein immature cells crowd the bone marrow. This leaves no room for healthy cells to grow and develop.

Anna's Fight with ALL

February 2018

Anna has been battling this cancer since February 2018. She undergone numerous cycle of intensive chemotheraphy and reached maintenance chemo phase for more than a year.

September 2018 – May 2019

Anna is in remission during this time but has been bedridden and disabled inside the hospital for 9 months due to chemotherapy complication. She was diagnosed with hip fracture and undergone hip fixation. Her chemo affected her immune system so bad that she also suffered salmonella osteomyelitis exactly on where she was operated. She undergone multiple surgeries on the affected hip joint to save the bone. Unfortunately, She had to undergo the total hip replacement surgery for her to walk again.

March 2020

For more than a year of remission, despite of regular monthly chemotherapy, maintenance medicines, check ups and frequent hospital visits, Anna received a heartbreaking news from her doctor. Her Lab result showed that the cancer cells had come back. She was advised to start a new round of treatment that is more intense, aggressive and costly than the one she endured before, they call it salvage chemo. Anna was so scared to have the treatment but she loves her family so much so she decided to fight again. With God’s grace, She reached remission after the chemotheraphy and was advised to undergo the Bone marrow transplant.

August 2020

Anna undergone the Bone marrow transplant as advised by her doctors. Through the help of her family, friends and her company, They was able to atleast pay the minimum amount due set by the hospital. Bone marrow transplant cost 1-2 Million pesos in the Philippines.

September 2020

After 2 months of remission, Anna received a more heartbreaking news. Based on her lab test, the leukemia cells had come back AGAIN! This time the cancer cells are more aggressive than before and her body is still weak due to the conditioning regime that was done to her prior to the bone marrow transplant. Her body is not that ready to face another rounds of intensive chemotherapy. Being strong in nature, Anna decided to face it again and fight again for her family. She was advised to undergo intensive chemo therapy and DLI donors lymphocytes infusion. But according to her doctors, the prognosis is not good with DLI.

This continuous battle with Leukemia plus the cost of treatment and hospitalization to date has taken a toll on Anna and her family in many aspects: physically, emotionally and financially. To manage the cancer, Anna is in constant need of platelets, medication, chemo treatment and prolonged hospital stay. She will need to undergon again another intensive chemo here in the Philippines and chemo in Singapore through clinical trial. After the chemo, She needs to undergo Bone Marrow Transplant again. This costs around $250,000 SG dollars and something that her family is now struggling to afford.
