Animal Shelter to Rescue Hundreds of Dogs from being killed

Local Community supporting Esma; http://www.esmaegypt.org/ is building Huge Animal Shelter for stray dogs to protect them from being killed.

In 2007 and early 2013, a mass shooting of stray dogs took place in Egypt. With hundreds of animals dead and their blood left to rot on the streets, the Egyptian government decided to look for other alternatives. Consequently, the government as well as large groups of the Egyptian society has found a ”cleaner” way to eliminate those stray animals by using poison instead. This does not only cause untimely deaths of countless cats and dogs that belong to numerous families and individuals, but it also causes the suffering and incredibly painful deaths of innocent animals. Egyptian authorities insist on KILLING hundreds of stray dogs every day with Strychnine poison that is forbidden worldwide, due to its undisputed damage to HUMAN BEINGS before animals and environment.

Despite our efforts to educate authorities on what should be done to control stray dogs' reproduction in a humane way; the government decided to start a large massacre in all the Egyptian governorates to take the lives of innocent stray dogs everywhere.

We, Animal Advocates in Egypt, have been rescuing hundreds of newly born puppies from the lap of their poisoned mothers; trying desperately to suck milk out of her lifeless breast. Those mothers were wagging their tails and running happily towards the veterinary medicine’s KILLERS when they fed them the poisoned food in the mouth, thinking that they are human beings trying to feed them. This program is a community based initiative that is not sponsored by the government and is solely run by active members within the locl community and veterinarians. The ultimate goal of this Initiative is help capture stray animals. Veterinarians then neuter/spay them, provide the needed medical care and then release the animals. Perhaps other communities can come up with similar programs or at the very least, take on this one?

Rather than buying animals from pet shops and breeders, people will be able to visit our shelter and adopt instead. After all, if they are looking to include a family member or welcome an addition to their family, the breed of the animal they are rescuing should not be a factor in their decision making process. They are rescuing a soul not buying an expensive watch.
