After going through hard times with my pets, I realized how important is to take a better care of them and how important is to have the money for taking care of them.
My cats were diagnosed with panleukopenia, a virus that attack their intestines and stomach and without proper care, they slowly die in pain.Their medical bills were higher than the ones for humans and finding these money to pay for the medical services and for the medication, was for me the hardest time.
I had a talk with the doctors and they explained clearly why the medical services for animals are more expensive, than the one for humans:
- the machines they use are more expensive - an example is the machine that you connect the perfusion. The one for humans costs X and the one for animals costs (X+1/2 X). It's higher with half of the price
- we do not have in Romania all the machinery, like the the one we could use to separate the plasma from blood. My cat had a drastic low level of white cells and red cells were in normal level. I needed plasma to rise the white cells, but even the Blood Bank did not have this option to help us;
- not all the owners have the possibility to pay the medical bills for their pets until the end, and most of the animals die. The available machines here in Romania operate the collected samples in low numbers. For a human every day in laboratories come more than 60 samples to be analyses, and for animals the laboratories receive around 20 samples/week. The costs to maintain a veterinary machine is high, so that is why the costs for pets are higher.
Since Bucharest developed a campaign to eliminate the dogs out from the streets, the cat population gained courage and they started to spread. But along with this increase of cat population, diseases started to spread on the street. The cats we see, some of them have visible diseases and some cannot be seen with bare eye. Most of the viruses are spread trough feces and sharing spaces together.
Most of us are not aware that we take these viruses on our shoes and on our clothes and we bring them in our homes to our pets. And the question that arises "Form where did my pet contacted this virus?"
A prevention method is to vaccine the animals, but most of the people have the mentality that pets have survived along the years and they do not need it so much. Also, most of the pet owners do not have the possibility to pay for vaccines or an annual check-up. So they just let it be.
The one that is mostly hurt is their pet and after him, the owner, because he could not offer a proper care.
I was one of the people who thought that if the pet stays inside the house, it is safe from all outside dangers. I did not vaccine my pets and I did not took an interest in possible disease that might come. My pets were hurt a lot due to my unconsciousness and I paid a high price, I became more aware of their needs and I want to do more not for my pets only, but also for other pets that are out there and need care.
My campaign is destined to raise money for medical care for animals and to donate them to the medical center that helped me save my pets. I want with this campaign to help the owners that have no possibility to save their pets due to financial problems and also help street animals that are hurt to receive care.
Romania lacks many things regarding animal welfare and I will try my best trough campaigns and other funds to improve this segment.
Thank you and I hope you will be with me to fight for a good cause.
