!! Follow our campaign as we continually update on all the animals' progress !!

Our small group calls themselves The Cat (and dog!) Squad of Cité Portugaise in El Jadida, Morocco**, and we are dedicated to helping the plight of our street animals! Though sterilization is a “frowned upon” concept here in Morocco, we are determined to change that through a concentrated and dedicated sterilization program with the help and advice of our local vet, Baki. It is the only way to reduce the stray population and, therefore, the suffering and fearful life of unwanted kittens. With dirt and cars, their lives are many times quite short and with no much love except an occasional pat on the head. (**for donation payment purposes, our location is listed as the US due to payment regulation restrictions--You can donate via PAYPAL!)

During our so-far three month lockdown that has occurred during prime birthing season, the ability to feed or even take any care of the stray cats and dogs, kittens and puppies is impossible for the residents. BUT we are changing all that, through a network of super-caring, loving, and amazing citizens and, of course, the wonderful Dr. Baki. Each morning we walked the entire neighborhood putting down or refilling food bowls and refreshing water bowls—if one is looking ill with “flu” or skinny with worms (most of them, unfortunately) or scratching all of their fur off because of horrid skin conditions (again, most of them), we call Baki to the rescue to start treatment.

We can’t do this without YOUR help, though. Lockdown and border closures have meant a rate of poverty unseen before, since tourism is 80% of the economy. Our plans for donations we receive will go:

  • FIRST to treatment and sterilization, concentrating on females to at least 75–85%, then 50+% of males.
  • SECOND to the building of shelters where all animals will be safe and protected. We are hoping to build many concrete/wood small cubbyhole-type shelters using discarded construction materials and local handy-people. Most have no shelter right now except one or two that have an old, small box. We’re looking to put little comfortable beds in them so they will finally have a safe and secure place (especially during tourist season when there are many cars!).
  • THIRD to local resident education regarding treatment and care of animals, targeting the children and youth.

We plan to update our funding page at least weekly or every few days with new videos and progress reports! We will have a Facebook page to go with it.

We appreciate any contribution you may find yourself in a position to give. Every little bit helps here as we create a beautiful world for all the hungry, sick and hurt animals. We are giving out a thanks-you to your donations, with the top one being a handmade Moroccan tile heart/paw print with your name, to be affixed to one of the shelters.

Thank you from the bottom of all of our hearts and from every one of these beautiful creatures. Their hope (Amal in Arabic, and espoir in French) lies in you!

During Covid-19, our borders were closed and I've since made it my mission to help all the beautiful stray, hungry animals roaming the neighborhood.

On my feeding walk a week ago, someone called me over and pointed to an alley -- this is what I found. Baki was called, but we are low on funds and there are a lot to try and help with this bunch of newborns in desperate danger. We set

An update and urgent appeal

Update posted by Maria Vano at 03:19 pm

Thanks to the generous donations so far, we have been able to sterilize one male, two females, and vaccinate and treat those three (all three are doing fantastic!). However, we have an URGENT appeal for this little boy due to an accident...somehow he got into the wrong hands and is. . . . .
