Hello! My name is Ana Elissa Cabrera. I am a Senior at Mather High School, located in Chicago, IL. My weighed GPA is 4.6, and my unweighed GPA is 3.56. I have taken 9 AP classes already, have about 200 service learning hours, have been in a varsity sport for four years, and am very involved in my school.
A bit about myself is that I was born in a small country called Guatemala, in a very underdeveloped village with no libraries or coleges, nor other major resources. After we got our residency, and later, citizenship, my Mother and I flew to the US and decided to live there. In the US, I was exposed to a lot of diversity. I was always engaging in conversations with people from diffrent cultures, learning bits and pieces of their langugage.
My exposure to rich cultures from all around the world inspired me to initiate my learning of a third language. I asked myself, " What language am I to learn next if all are beautiful?" And then it hit me: the language I wished to learn next was Russian! And what better way to learn this language than to study abroad in Russia? After browsing for outstanding studying abroad opportunities, I came accross a Summer Program offered by the AIFS Study Abroad Program. I knew this is the exact program I wished to participate in.
The total cost of the Summer 2016 Russia trip is $8,350 , which includes the program tuition ($5,995), the airplane tickets from USA-UK-RUSSIA-UK-USA, and the $395 Application Fee. The remaining money is for general emergencies that might occur during this trip. The program tuition includes language classes, housing, food plan, trips, tours, and other transferable college credit classes.
My single mother was never able to afford such opportunities for my little sister or me. We have beem financially struggling because she is the only one who supports our family, and her factory job does not pay enough to fully support our family of three. However, I am still hopeful that there is a possibility, that there is hope, for a person from my background to attend such an amazing opportunity to study abroad to a beautiful, history-rich country like Russia.
This program will really help me in pursuing Linguistics as a major in college, which I will attend next year on August 2016.
There are no words that can explain how grateful I would be if you aid me in making this journey possible for me. Thank you very much!
