Help the Venezuelan Mathematical Community

For over 30 years, the Venezuelan Mathematical Association (AMV) has promoted the teaching of mathematics and mathematical research in Venezuela, as well as cooperation and exchange among mathematicians of Latin American and the rest of the world.

The AMV organizes the “Jornadas Matemáticas” every year (31 have been held consecutively in as many years) with the participation of over 100 local and foreign mathematicians in each event. During the Jornadas, researchers present the results of their investigations and exchange ideas about the progress in their fields. The AMV also organizes the “Escuela Venezolana” de Matemáticas (EVM) in which over 3000
mathematicians have participated in its 31 editions, most of them graduate students; more than 124 textbooks have been produced for these courses. The Boletín of the AMV is the principal Venezuelan mathematical journal. The AMV is the link between the Venezuelan community of mathematics professors and researchers with important international associations such as the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the Unión Matemática de América Latina y el Caribe (UMALCA).

These activities have been profoundly affected in recent years by the difficult situation of the country, which has resulted in the near paralysis of AMV’s activities and a significant migration of mathematicians from Venezuela to other countries. For example, the AMV Bulletin had to be converted into an electronic journal, as it became impossible to print the 400 copies that were produced and distributed every year. It has only been possible to continue the EVM thanks to the extraordinary commitment and efforts of a few mathematicians, and some financial support from international institutions, including the IMU, albeit with a decreasing number of participants.

The AMV has been unable to pay its fees to the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and to the Unión Matemática de América Latina y el Caribe (UMALCA) for several years; these obligations represent a debt in international currency that the AMV cannot presently meet.

What do we ask for and to whom are we addressing our request?

We need your help to pay our debt to the IMU and UMALCA and to support the activities of the AMV in Venezuela. We are addressing our request to Venezuelan mathematicians, principally those working in countries other than Venezuela, to the families and friends of mathematicians, as well as to friends of mathematics from anywhere in the world: Societies, Associations, Institutions and all those who would like to support us.

Why now?

During the first week of August of this year, the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2018) was held in Rio de Janeiro, following the General Assembly of the IMU that took place in Sao Paulo. During these events, certain developments occurred that were determinant in motivating this fund-raising campaign, as we now explain: The Venezuelan Mathematical Association (AMV) now owes the IMU the fees corresponding to six years which amount to somewhat over 8,000 EUROS. It was expected that Venezuela would be expelled from the IMU during the General Assembly, and thereby lose its membership. However, this did not occur thanks to the solidarity of many of the delegations present and Venezuela was granted a grace period until December 2019 to pay a substantial part of its debt. Brazil offered to cover a third of AMV’s debt, at the initiative of the President of the ICM 2018, the Brazilian Marcelo Viana, as well as the support of the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) and of the Organizing Committee of the ICM. Several other mathematical societies and institutes of the Americas and some from Europe also expressed their disposition to collaborate. The AMV also owes several annual fees to UMALCA.

The reactivation of the AMV is critical for the continuity of its mathematical activities in Venezuela during this period of extreme economic stress, as well as for all who are involved with this institution. The members of the AMV, some of who are in Venezuela, and others abroad, are all committed to achieving this goal. The success of this campaign will be an important and tangible part of this reactivation. For these reasons, we need your support, each according to his or her priorities and possibilities. Your contribution is fundamental for the continuation of the mathematical activity in Venezuela. The current generation of mathematicians and the future ones will be extremely grateful.

NOTE: Your contribution can be done with your credit card or your PayPal account. Funds will be collected in the PayPal account [email protected] (to be shown in your statement) and then used to pay AMV debt to IMU and UMALCA.
