For one year I was homeless and living on the streets, eating discarded food from trash cans and dumpsters and sleeping on park benches in the cold, rain and snow. My feet hurt from wearing shoes that didn't fit properly because with all the walking I was doing my feet would swell. I didn't have a change of socks for 5 months. When a nice young woman gave me a pair of new clean socks, it was the greatest day of my life! My feet felt so much better wearing those clean socks instead of the skin and dirt encrusted socks I was wearing.
I was homeless because of mental illness. Now I am on medicine which controls my hallucinations and paranoia and haven't been homeless since.
The homeless is our society are like ghosts we see everyday. They're ghosts because we see them and we ignore them and don't talk to them. We figure that they are to blame for their circumstances and we go along with our lives while they struggle because so few of us want to help. If you talked to a homeless person, you would see someone's son or brother and they cease to be anonymous. You would want to help them because you would see their humanity.
Each week myself and others I know want to go to Atlanta and help homeless people there. We want to offer them food, a pair of socks and other things they need along with directing them toward resources in the community which can offer them help. We are keenly aware that many of the homeless are mentally ill and need compassion and that is what we will offer them. A meal and a prayer.
Here is how your donations will help Atlanta's homeless:
$2.00 – One sandwich, piece of fruit, a nutrition bar, a cookie, container of punch, one pair of socks, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and a pamphlet with resources such as shelters, soup kitchens, and places where they can receive free medical care and clothes/shoes. This basic package will go to one homeless person.
$20 will provide for 10 people
$40 will provide for 20 people
$80 will provide for 40 people
$120 will provide for 60 people
Any amount you can give no matter how small will be greatly appreciated. If you are in a life circumstance where you are unable to give monetarily you can still give by sharing this fundraiser on social media with your friends.
Without your help, we can't help homeless people have a glimmer of hope. Without your help, we can't give them food and socks and the other necessities they need. Without your help, there won't be someone there with them holding their hand saying a prayer to God. But with your help, you can provide hope to the hopeless. With your help, you will put a meal inside an empty stomach. With your help, we can make a day a little brighter for those who live on the edge of society.
I will give updates every Sunday as to the progress of the project.
Thank you so much and may God Bless you.
