Lessons for Women
A double-bill of 2 female solo performances by Sonia Kwek and Tan Weiying.
Sonia and Weiying were classmates at the Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI), Singapore, an independent theatre school for contemporary artists. We trained together in the three-year, practice-based, professional actor training programme and graduated at the end of 2017.
is this project about?
Our 2 solo works were originally presented as standalone pieces for our Final Year Individual Projects at ITI in May 2017. Both of us found synchronicity in our works and hence decided to continue our exploration together. We feel that both pieces speak to the current climate of the feminist movement; particularly, the empowerment of the female gender, and the need to speak up. We also wanted to further examine the impact of the ‘Chinese Feminine’ ideal on how women deal with their desires, through our experiences as 2 Singaporean Chinese women.
We have re-developed our shows this time, with further research and references. While last year’s presentation was more of a showcase of our abilities as acting students, moving forward we are engaging with professional designers to further emphasise our work through the production values, thus providing a full theatrical experience.
will my money go towards?
《女。性。诫？》Alternative Lessons for Women will be presented at at the Ex-Theatre 2018 Asia Weekend Theatre Festival (EX-亞洲劇團 2018亞洲假日劇場戲劇節). The show will be on 26-28 Oct 2018, at EX Studio, Miaoli, Taiwan. More information about the show is available here.
As two emerging independent artists, we are self-funding everything from our development to rehearsal process and flying to Miaoli to perform. Fortunately, we have gathered a production team that is willing to work for a small honorarium fee (which we are paying out of our own pocket). However, we still need help for our travel expenditure. Money raised through this campaign will specifically fund the travel and production costs for our team.
