Family of 5 (mom, dad, and 3 daughters, 7,5 & 2 years old) looking to get out of debt and start planning for the girls future.
My wife and I were fortunate enough to buy a home in 2009 and get married in 2011. I was still pursuing my Master degree in Counseling till 2012, so we had 1 income and A LOT of student debt.
In 2012 after graduation and as I was looking for work we found out my wife and I were going to have our first kid! Exciting and scary. Scary because, how were we going to afford daycare if I get a job? It was cheaper for me to be a Stay-at-home dad than it was to afford daycare. We made the decision for me to stay at home
1 kiddo turned to 2 and 2 to 3. In between I did my best to work in the evenings as a soccer coach but that only did so much. We looking into a financial advisor and they suggested to consolidate our debt into 1 monthly payment instead of multiple.
THIS ENDED UP BEING THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF OUR LIVES.
We ended up consulting a debt MANAGEMENT company that make everything appear and sound like they were a debt consolidation company.
It was 1 payment a month, to them! They let all of our credit cards go into default. Once we caught wind of this was when we got served with court papers!!! We called and called the company that was supposedly helping us. And they kept reassuring us that they'd take care of all of it. That our credit score would start going back up soon. THEY DID NOT. They said we didn't have to worry about the courts because they would negotiate with the companies so that it would never have to be in a court. WE DID. IT WAS AND HAS BEEN THE MOST STRESSFUL TIME OF OUR LIVES.
We eventually got rid of this "debt consolidation" company after 1000s of dollard and only 1 credit card settled by them over 10 months! And we had to do the research and negotiations on our own.
4 years down the line we are still trying to rebuild our credit. We've never been late on any car/house/insurance/utility payment, EVER and since the transition from that dreaded consolidation company , we had kept up with the 2 card we had left open for emergencies.
Which brings me to this plea for some type of help from anyone who can.
We knew our credit score were going up. Had 2.5 years of positive payments on everything we had, our family of 5 needs larger than this 800 square foot house, so we decided to look into a home equity loan or refinance so that we could get totally out of debt and move forward into affording a larger house as the girls grow.
We were declined! Because of those months that credit consolidation company let our cards go into default! Still after 4 years! Even after someone suggested we declare bankruptcy, we knew that we wanted to get move and save up for our family. Plus we knew we owed those debts and didn't want to take the easy way out. Oh, and we also have built over $60,000 of equity in our home. We've paid every month for the past 11 years without ever missing a payment.
We couldn't believe it. We worked so hard to do the right thing. My wife works so hard for our family. I work and do the best I can as a Stay-at-home dad of 3 little girls. THIS IS DEVASTATING. My wife works so hard to provide for us and her and the girls deserve what they earned. It was my fault for even suggesting a debt consolidation. I felt horrible. I tried starting my own small business to help the family, a business where the girls could stay at my work and play and have fun. It worked out for a bit but the cost of such a thing and then the time it took to try and be successful never melded. So I had to give that up. Which wasn't a big deal because I'd rather be with my family and help my wife as best I can around the home. I just wish it had become successful so my wife didn't have to work.
Anyway, the reason I'm asking for the money is because my wife and kids deserve to have a savings for their school. A larger home that has 2 bathrooms for 4 girls instead of our small 1 bathroom home.
My hope is that their are people out there who understand this situation and have overcome their own debts and understand how hard it is to get out of a situation like we got in. We tried to do everything correct (after we found out what the company did to our credit) and there is still no light at the end of the tunnel for our family. It is so demoralizing and stressful to know we should be able to get a home loan, but because of one 10 month period in an already stressful time, we let in to someone who we thought was looking out for our best interest...
With the money we are not looking for brand new things. We are not looking for anything that goes beyond our needs of food and shelter. I drive a 2010 van and my wife a 2015 car. We are happy with those things.. We are just trying to get the chance to be rid of this debt and hardships that came with that unfortunately decision to seek help at one of our most vulnerable times in life.
Thank you for listening and any consideration in your help.
