Alighting For Lola

The short film follows Lola Chong, a 16-year-old girl from Malaysia who is coerced by her family to work for her uncle’s company in Singapore in order to help the family earn. This has forced her to disregard her education, but she continues to long for her rights to study. Her role is then challenged in lieu of the company’s mass retrenchment, as she accidentally witnessed Kei, a mute worker, who was sexually harassed by her own uncle. In the aftermath of it, Lola struggles to find her place and manoeuvre through the unsettling social climate.

The Journey

Alighting for Lola is a story about questioning your function as a person in a world that doesn’t seem to give you the chance to do so due to the pre-existing expectations and constraints that you are already placed in. However, we can’t help but to wonder if that is really all that there is to be and all that we can be. Hence, we question the lines that they draw and we question the things that they make us do. We question what power means and what it would be like to grant it to ourselves, because the meanings we make for ourselves are often the truest, even if it’s not the best.

Through this film, we wish to express the struggles of being, but also celebrate the liberating realisation of becoming your own person.

The Campaign

The team is currently in the midst of garnering funds to bring our production to reality and we would highly appreciate your assistance in bringing this story to life. We believe in 100% transparency in our fundraising campaign. The funds received will be financing the film for 5 days shoot with over 20 crew and cast in February 2021. Once the film is completed, we wish to be able to screen the film to several film festivals.

Here's a breakdown of the fund ($5000 SGD) and how we intend to use it :

Cast 25%

Art (Production Design) 20%

Location 20%

Transport 15%

Food & Craft Services 10%

Production 10%

We already have equipment from school and manpower from our peers. The main funds will go to both cast and art (Production Design); having a film set in a different time period would demand emphasis on the Production Design to make the film come to life.

You are able to make the donation with credit or debit card, simply select the paypal button and it will direct you to external website.
