Against COVID-19 Pandemic Campaign

Help us return to strategic get-up-and-go and raise the $100,000 for the fulfillment of support to schools through the implementation of the Basic Computer Learning Series in Primary and Secondary Education in Zambia.

The Situation

Social enterprises suffered a greater decline in business activities compared to medium and large firms — an unsurprising result because most of the country's social enterprises stopped operating. Currently, COVID-19 is disrupting several sectors of economic activity, and it is feared that certain businesses will not be able to recover from this health , social and economic crisis..

Social entrepreneurs in the African context, who are fundamentally fragile economically because they are not connected to any steady funding, are especially affected. They are, for the most part, practiced by individuals who suffer from the lack of new jobs and the cancellation of those already committed contracts. Many social entrepreneurs actually risk having to interrupt their activities in the remaining months of this year and thus give up their passion.

This unprecedented situation would inevitably lead to an inevitable loss of knowledge that has been patiently developed over centuries and contributes to the fame and popularity of our countries in terms of innovation.

My worry is that....

My social activity is unlikely to avoid this fatal fate - I mean it will remain closed. It is my only source of income and the key source of income for my household. The risks of a permanent economic recession brings me today to ask you to pursue this challenging path. My activity as a social entrepreneur is my passion, my dedication to a professional life that I never stop sharing with you. I can't bring myself to see all this ruined!

I have decided to call on you who associate with me and support my work on social networks to launch this fundraising campaign with the ultimate aim of being able to continue working and living my passion: authoring academic books and other publications, graphically designing my gigs online, training others in the area of basic computer skills and passing on my knowledge to the general public. Your support or rather donation of money will be used solely and purely to continue to be able to pay rentals for the business, liquidate debt and fulfill support to schools, construct modern computer labs, including various expenses for my company, which will allow me to continue living my passion for the time ahead of me.

With COVID-19 pandemic, a learning environment like this would not be health enough to sustain the learners. This is not acceptable according to the social distancing guidelines. However, the school cannot do anything due to financial constraints - See how a poor girl keep glancing from afar struggling to learn basic computer skills.

Our relationship with the schools is fractured, unfulfilled, and disenfranchised because of COVID-19 Pandemic. Did you know that Zambian rural schools have insufficient textbooks, computers and computer-teachers than any other country in the world? In reality, about 150,000 students, at junior secondary level, attempt computer examinations every year. Our distribution of textbooks, computers and teacher training is valued by any beneficiary school, but there is no such support to capitalize on "high demand".

According to the 2018 Ministry of General Education EMIS survey, computer studies, as a subject, is generally the most costly subject due to high computer costs, with inadequate trained teachers to teach effectively. Most of the schools that are doing well are urban schools, although the ratio of computer users is still 1:7. Moreover, there are no comparable programs that have been circulated, provided or funded by schools to enhance the teaching and learning of basic computer skills, which is the intended aim to be reached by 2030. Since we started in 2018, my organization has been in the forefront and the only one supporting schools.

At the same time, it's virtually impossible for a student to have access to a computer at home in the world we live in. Many households are low-income and cannot afford to purchase computers. Computer laboratories are limited, and most schools use ordinary classrooms as learning points. This undermines the viability of teaching, consistency, and teaching will not efficiently produce what they consider to be a successful lesson. Most of all, they're unbiased and unpleasant-you want to get out as soon as you can.

Due to the afore mentioned worries, and just as any hero in any area and environment would emerge to help the people conquer the villains, I rise up and work against COVID-19 pandemic, to start with, and also continue working to support schools in the area of computers. I cannot win alone! I will need people around me and in my community to support this noble cause. Help me raise the money and achieve the goal.

The operating philosophy of this crowdfunding platform is based on 'keep all funds': at least the minimum sum $100,000 must be met, otherwise the project will not succeed and the funds will not do the required work.

I did not wish to set a minimum sum too high to be more likely to conclude the project, which would at least guarantee payment of the listed items on my expenditure plan and expenses of my project. The $100,000 refers to the full annual preparation.

If the target is exceeded, the funds will allow me to extend this time and, if it is largely exceeded, to equip myself with new or missing equipment that I could not buy due to lack of adequate cash.

About Me?

I am Kilby Lungu and I live in Hillview Park, Lusaka, Zambia. I served for 10 years as a Class Teacher in Design Technology and Computers. I have also worked in the NGO world for 13 years - USAID Project, UNICEF Project, DANCE4LIFE, Children International Project, RTI Project and MIET AFRICA Project as a senior executive.

I have left a career that was financially lucrative to me, but which no longer corresponded to my ambitions, to turn to a rare career of social enterprise, much less remunerative, but which has become a true passion.

I co-founded the Centre for elearning and Information Technology Research (See URL here). in Lusaka in April 2018 after investing all my savings on a Master of Science in ICT Course that I am yet to graduate. Now that I live in my area of descent, I definitely live decently from my business, but the joy I have in working in my workplace for my customers, in rebuilding and sustaining our identity and in transmitting my expertise is indispensable to me.

What I am doing now?

I am raising funds to continue what we started and I am in need of your support to fulfill my 'superhero' role as a Keen Social Supporter, involving the construction of 4 new modern computer labs, distribution of 40,000 textbooks, delivery of 300 laptops and training of 200 teachers in the partner schools.

In May 2018, we began implementing the Basic Computer learning series in primary and secondary education, aimed at improving the teaching and learning of basic computer skills for learners in upper primary (grades 5-7) and Junior Secondary (grade 8-9).

We have acquired a few stuff and some supplies through personal support, raised a little fund to pay materials and other set-up costs, and now we are asking the public to help us with this final step.

What we ought to do we are asking for $100,000 to allow us to work out all operational issues, to recall employees and pay them their dues, to pay off debts accumulated during the pandemic, such as rentals for office space, printing 40,000 textbooks, 300 laptops, etc., to purchase equipment and to setup our teacher training space again.
