Tria-Aegina Arts & Crafts Workshop

With the money I have received so far I made a down payment to a lovely little store down town Aegina, People don't have money to help me but they helped me by working in the store e.g. Painted the walls, brought a shop window, I had many scraps of wood which have been carefully cared for polished and set up in the store as shelves and all these wonderful friends and technicians agreed to get payed in the summer.... so I did prove that when there is a wish, you love what you do, are an honest person there is ALWAYS a way, in a few days I'll be posting some photos of my store all set up and maybe you would like to help me achieve my money goal so I can pay everyone before the summer!!! Thankyou to all the people who are helping and supporting me I will do the same if ever needed!

This is my story...

Tria the number 3 is the number of creation intuition, used by all the ancient cultures, the perfect number which symbolises wholeness and closure a triangle. This is the number I chose to represent my future workshop, it also symbolises my family of three a number which makes things happen......Things in Greece in the last 10 years have not been good, with the crisis, people who earned honest livings and paid their debts have become homeless with no jobs feeling shamed, desperate with no hope not believing how things changed over night.

I am struggling a single parent with two children to survive and provide for my family, I can't find a job as I am over 40years old and all my life people have told me I should open a store with my handcrafts because this is what I am good at, the island I live in, has many tourists who love handmade objects and my store would do well, so this is my chance, my opportunity with your help, to give an example to my children that when you really want something you can have it, if you work hard enough and believe in yourself!

Island Art Workshop

In Greece, the “Island People” are different from those who live on the mainland.In Aegina they produce their art in these green hills, surrounded by turquoisecoves and stunning sea. The island is flooded by day visitors throughout the season, yet few of them know where to find the island’s real art, other than themass-produced products sold along Aegina’s waterfront. Often workshops and sales outlets are spread throughout Aegina’s pine-covered hills, and are difficult to locate on a one-day trip by ferry from Athens.

My goal is to gather some of the best work of these artists in one place—an art workshop a block from the seafront: the Island Art Workshop. In this workshopand gallery, visitors can watch the various artists make their crafts, make a small keepsake with artist encouragement, and choose refined gifts from a variety of island artists’ work.

Although the Workshop will eventually be self-supporting, startup funds are required, in order that the workshop will be equipped and ready for small artists and craftspeople who may commit for space a week at a time. Because artists may change from week to week, the workshop will have a constantly fluid displayof items to be purchased, crafts to be tried by the customer, and artists to observe.

In a time of increasing mechanism, when truly hand-made articles are becoming less and less available, the ability for individual artists to continue to pursue their crafts is decreasing every day. The Island Art Workshop will allow exposure to arts that may soon vanish, and may also serve as a prototype for other small communities.

Your contribution will help establish the Island Art Workshop: pay for initial interiorand occupancy costs, as well as for outreach and marketing for individual artists. As a donor, no matter the size of the donation, you will know that you contributed to keeping a small Greek island’s arts alive.
