My name is Mongezi (Mo) Mabena. I live in an informal settlement called (Kanana) Gugulethu in Cape Town South Africa. My life was changed drastically on Christmas morning 2019 when life happened in the worst way possible. I was walking to my cousin’s place when I was tragically hit by a stray bullet.

Growing up in poverty and in a community where it is a daily struggle for survival, I was often exposed to difficult circumstances. However, I was always determined to rise above it and to create a better life for myself and my family. I have a 4 year old son who deserves the world and I would like him to have the opportunities I never had. I've Always extended a helping hand whenever I could, I founded an organisation in 2015 which had a sole purpose to uplift and help the less privileged people in our country( for more on this click this link https://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/Local/Peoples-Post/Barefoot-for-a-good-cause-20150428-2).

After I was shot my life as well as the lives of my family was changed in a second. I am the only breadwinner and they depend on my ability to generate an income. Unfortunately I now have an incomplete T6 spinal cord injury. I have no movement in my legs, no bladder or bowel control, my trunk muscles are non-functional and I might be dependent on a wheelchair for the rest of my life.

I am determined to make the best of the circumstances I find myself in and I will aim to be a role model and spokesperson for people with disabilities. I plan to still live life to the fullest, provide for my family and to make my son proud of his father.

In order for me to do this I will require your help. Wheelchairs and other assistive devices are very expensive.I need to be as independent as possible and that means I will need equipment that is suited to my needs within my home, community and work environment. My home will also need some improvements to make it wheelchair friendly and some of the funds will be used on those improvements(see pictures of my home)

I am not able to afford this, but I hope that you will open your hearts and help me to move forward.

My medical aid is most likely to cover 50-55% of the below mentioned cost.

Costs:

Lightweight Wheelchair R65 000

Specialized cushion (to prevent pressure sores) R9000

Other equipment to ensure that I am independent in my home and community (rural) environment R25000
