Help Paralympian Achmat “Sharkboy” Hassiem recover from severe coma

Update posted by Taariq Hassiem On Nov 23, 2021

I thought I'd just give an idea of the cost thus far.

Achmat's hospital medical bill has come to R1.2 million . This includes the doctor's visits, physio, speech therapist, medication and all other tests and procedures they've had to do so far. This works out to approximately R20 000 per day in the ICU.

A massive shukran to everyone's duas, prayers, good faith and ongoing support. We truly appreciate it.

Just shy of 2 months and Achmat is finally stable enough to leave the hospital. He has fought off recurring infections to get to this point, so we are incredibly proud of him for his fighting spirit.

He has been moved to the rehabilitation facility, and we are extremely happy to have reached this big day. Though he has not regained consciousness, we are taking this win in his road to recovery. The journey will be long, it will be tough, and there are still many more hurdles to overcome.

We will meet with his new medical team soon to discuss their plan going forward, as we are not out of the woods by any means. We will leave another update then.

Thank you to everyone for the ongoing support. We are grateful beyond measure.

Today marks 1 whole month since Achmat was first admitted to hospital.

He has managed to fight off the infections that were most worrisome to the doctors. He is finally off the ventilator and breathing on his own.

He has been seen by a neurologist, physio, and speech therapist in addition to the ICU doctors, whom all agree that the movements he does exhibit currently, are involuntary. He is technically still in a coma, but not as severe as it was a couple of weeks ago.

Now that his vitals are stable, they are considering moving him to the rehabilitation facility next week where his recovery therapy will become more intensive. We were warned that he won't wake up as the Achmat we know and love, so that's why it is important to start this next step in his road to recovery as he has suffered some brain damage.

The continuous love, faith and support he's recieving is most heartwarming ❤

Thank you 🌱

Achmat "Sharkboy" needs intensive rehab in a facility after his ICU hospital stay.

He is not conscious yet and needs physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy so that his brain can reestablish connections and relearn what we take for granted everyday. We would like to appeal for monetary support to help our humble family pay for his medical expenses so that he can make a full recovery.

Shukran (thank you) to everyone for their ongoing prays and support. We are truly grateful.
