Campaign Story
We are reaching out to you to consider helping out our beloved retired administrative secretary, Heather Turner. As many of you know, Heather spent over two years trying to sell her house and retire after her 26 year career at Acadia University. She actually retired from Acadia but had to return to her position because she could not sell her home. She was forced to spend money that she didn’t really have to upgrade her house in order to make it saleable. It was a very emotional time for her (and us). Last summer, Heather finally had a buyer who signed a firm deal with her realtor. She was ecstatic! With a firm deal in hand and a closing date, Heather gave two week’s notice to terminate her employment at Acadia in July, 2016.
The day after she stopped working, she learned that the buyer had lied about having financing in place and wanted out of the deal. The news was devastating, as you can imagine. Heather did not have the money to fight the buyer in court, nor did she have enough income to keep her house. Her financial situation was dire, as she was depending on the sale of the house to cover her liabilities. On October 25, 2016, Heather was forced to declare bankruptcy.
Heather is now living in an apartment near her sister in Summerside, PEI. She started a new job at Dollarama to help support herself. Although she has been discharged from her bankruptcy obligations, the bankruptcy only took care of her creditor debts. Her out-of-pocket expenses during the whole ordeal were substantial. For example, she had paid for a new oil tank for her house as a condition of sale; she had to continue to pay house insurance and utilities until the bankruptcy went into effect; there were charges to the bankruptcy court, etc. Heather is approximately $14,000.00 behind where she would have been financially if the buyer had not reneged on the deal. She continues to struggle financially.
We are hoping to raise enough funds to help Heather recoup her costs and set her off into the retirement that she so very much deserves with what she would have had if her house had sold as planned. We have chosen the Go Get Funding site to raise the funds because they offer a "keep it all" structure, meaning that even if we do not reach our fundraising goal, Heather will still receive the funds donated. Additionally, the site allows for weekly transfers, meaning that the funds raised will start to help Heather immediately, instead of being held until the end of the fundraising campaign.
We
know the important role that she played in so many of your (and our) lives at
Acadia. It is not the retirement life
any of us would wish for her.

I graduated from the Acadia MSc in Psychology in 2007 and I wouldn't have made it through without Heather's help and cheerful disposition!
