Šibenik Paws are organizing a campaign called "A Better Life for Croatian Cats" with the aim of neutering/spaying and providing veterinary care for about 500 cats in Šibenik, a city on the coast of Croatia. One of the long-term benefits of this project will be the prevention of unwanted kittens being abandoned or inhumanely "dealt with" by irresponsible owners – a practice which is still, even in the 21st century, widespread in Croatia.

WHO ARE WE?

We are Šibenik Paws, a non-profit animal protection organization based in Šibenik, Croatia. Since starting our work in 2018, we have found homes for over 250 abandoned cats and dogs. In collaboration with other organizations, we have also spayed/neutered over 1000 animals from around the Šibenik-Knin County. Before giving it for adoption, we take every animal to the vet, where it is treated for parasites, given its shots, microchipped, and, if the animal has already reached sexual maturity, spayed or neutered. By doing this, we are working on systematically eradicating unwanted reproduction of cats and dogs and, in turn, preventing their offspring from being abandoned by irresponsible owners. This is also why we organize educational events at primary schools around Šibenik: to help the younger generations develop a sense of empathy and responsibility towards animals.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROBLEMS WE ENCOUNTER?

Animal abandonment is still a big issue in Croatia. Owners discarding their cats' and dogs' unwanted litters is the most common scenario – we often find unwanted puppies that have been left in a box in the woods or, even worse, kittens that have been stuffed in plastic bags and thrown into the sea.

Croatia's Animal Protection Act itself is not so bad, but in many cities and municipalities, it is only partially implemented or it is simply not adhered to. There is a serious lack of awareness about abandoned and abused animals among the authorities and the citizens and not enough attention is given to this issue. The authorities are not doing enough to educate people or to finance projects that are important for the well-being of animals. Animal protection organizations are overwhelmed by the pressure and amount of work they have to do, as they have to tackle issues that are supposed to be dealt with by the City. There are too few volunteers, too many abandoned animals, and very little funds that trickle in from private donations and cannot even cover the costs of veterinary care.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

That is how our decision to start a crowdfunding campaign came about – we want to tackle the problem of uncontrolled reproduction of cats in Šibenik. Our plan is to raise enough money to neuter/spay about 500 cats and to make it possible for the citizens of Šibenik to neuter/spay the cats they feed. Since the coast of Croatia has a temperate climate, cats tend to live outside and roam the city freely. When the time comes, they mate, and their owners do not always want to take care of their offspring. We are trying to educate people on the importance of sterilization as the only effective way to prevent unwanted offspring.

The whole campaign will be carried out by volunteers, which means that all the money raised will be spent to cover the costs of sterilization. Every cat that is treated will also be tagged to indicate that it has been neutered/spayed and that it is under veterinary care.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Each donation is a step towards making Šibenik an even more beautiful place than it already is – for humans, as well as our feline friends. To show how grateful we are for your donations, we have set up the following system of rewards.

To demonstrate more clearly where your donations are going, we have compiled a brief illustration:
