We are climbing into our wetsuits once again and giving The Abersoch Triathlon a bash in order to help with the fundraising effort for a fantastic initiative, The Treehouse Project, at Holy Cross Hospital.

Holy Cross Hospital is home to 40 patients, including our cousin Matt, who receives care there following a serious cycling accident. All the patients are highly dependent, needing skilled care and treatment. With its access to therapies and activities and an approach that challenges the limits to recovery, Holy Cross helps people with long-term conditions achieve the best possible quality of life.

One important aspect of this is enabling residents to access the outdoors, going out on trips and in their lovely calming sensory garden, where they can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. The hospital is set in beautiful natural woodland and whilst patients get glimpses from their rooms this is currently not wheelchair accessible. Friends and family of patients living at Holy Cross have embarked on The Tree House Project, which aims to change this.

The Treehouse Project will provide a wheelchair accessible space in the hillside woodland surrounding the hospital for patients to enjoy with their friends and family. The vision is for a 15‐metre walk‐way that will lead onto a viewing platform, where people can take a breath of fresh air and enjoy the flora and fauna (including deer) that can be found in the grounds outside Holy Cross.

Knowing the happiness we get from being able to enjoy fresh air and green space, how important the outdoors is for Matt and the potential benefits of access to nature on patient’s psychological and physical wellbeing, we feel this project is an incredibly valuable one.

Any support you can provide would be greatly appreciated and help power our wobbly legs in a couple of weeks’ time!
