#Abe2Zee against CKD

Update posted by Zee Sta Barbara On Sep 03, 2018

Hello 1st Monday of Septemeber! It's the start of the BER season - the festive season!

Living-donor kidney transplant procedure

Why does Zee needs a Kidney Transplant? She has Chronic Kidney Diesase, Stage 4. Her kidneys are failing so her doctors has prescribed her to undergo Kidney Transplant without reaching to the point of needing to undergo dialysis.

She can live a longer happy life with a Kidney Transplant:

"On the other hand, patients who receive a kidney transplant typically live longer than those who stay on dialysis. A living donor kidney functions, on average, 12 to 20 years, and a deceased donor kidney from 8 to 12 years.

Patients who get a kidney transplant before dialysis live an average of 10 to 15 years longer than if they stayed on dialysis. Younger adults benefit the most from a kidney transplant, but even adults as old as 75 gain an average of four more years after a transplant than if they had stayed on dialysis."

A diabetic can have high and low blood sugar reactions called: Hyperglycemia and Hypoglycemia, respectively. It is a condition found in individuals with diabetes, either insulin-dependent or non-insulin-dependent. In short, any diabetic can/may experience this, depending on several factors such as

- food intake

- excercise

- medication, oral or injected particularly insulin

- stress

or a lack thereof the above.

It is a myth to siimply say that (particularly Type 1) diabetics has "high sugar" or "drank or ate too many sugars", "...that's why they're diabetics".

"A diet high in calories from any source (including sugar) contributes to weight gain and weight gain increases your risk for type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and unknown factors that trigger the onset of the disease. Type 2 diabetes is not caused by sugar, but by genetics and lifestyle factors. "

Zee has Chronic Kidney Disease, Stage 4 and will need to undergo Kidney Transplant Surgery. She has Type 1 Diabetes since she was 12 years old which caused her to have several complications. She also has a permamnent eye damange called Diabetes Retinopathy.

Hi Friends and Supporters!

Image result for become a kidney donor

This is for those who are considering donating their kidney to save a life - Zee's life or anyone else who may be in need to undergo Kidney Transplant.

Below listed is what one living donor can expect after kidney donation.

1. People can live normal lives with only one kidney. As long as the donor is evaluated thoroughly and cleared for donation, he or she can lead a normal life after the surgery. When the kidney is removed, the single normal kidney will increase in size to compensate for the loss of the donated kidney.

2. Living donation does not change life expectancy, and does not appear to increase the risk of kidney failure. In general, most people with a single normal kidney have few or no problems...

3. Some donors have reported long-term problems with pain, nerve damage, hernia or intestinal obstruction. These risks seem to be rare, but there are currently no national statistics on the frequency of these problems.

4. After donation you should be able to go back to a regular, healthy lifestyle. If you are in good health, there will probably not be any specific dietary restrictions.

5. Generally, living kidney donors do well with pregnancy after their donation.

As with anything in life, nothing is 100% risk free. You may read the full article "What to Expect After Donation" here: https://www.kidney.org/…/livingd…/what-expect-afte...

Also, we are continuously looking for different ways to earn more income to support Zee's medical needs.

Hi Supporters,

Here's a screenshot of some of my latest lab results

Thank you and thank God that I am still regarded as stable, as per my doctors' assesments. However, we are again reminded that we need to actively find a donor because if my Creatinine was at 3.00mg/dL instead of 2.46mg/dL, then my case would abruptly be considered critical and I would have to be ready for my transplant. I'm still holding on as much as I can, taking my meedicatioins and being strict and good with my diet. So thank you for the support and love. Please continue to send the support!

Thank you very much!

Today was Extraction day.

Every month Zee undergoes at least one set of blood extraction for her monthly check ups and follow ups with her doctors.

We hope friends and supporters can continue to pray and support us in this journey.
Thank you!

Hi friends and supporters,
As we were going through and reviewing Zee's medical record, we found this one 5 page document that her hospital provided. It's quite a list of things about her condition. The photo below is just one page out of 5.

We hope you can continue to pray with us and support for Zee's medical condition.

Thank you very much!

Zee has Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease based on her GFR. So what is GFR?

Image result for gfr

"The glomerular filtration rate is a value that helps determine if you have kidney disease and also what stage of kidney disease you are in. Whatever the value of the GFR is, is checked against a range that determines how many functions your kidneys have.
A GFR of 15-29 is considered severe, or stage 4
A GFR of less than 15 is considered end stage, or stage 5"

Hi friends and supporters!

Zee has a Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGM) attached to her. It was placed on her since Friday and it will be removed this coming Thursday for review. What the CGM does is it checks her sugar levels every 5 minutes continusously for 24 hours everyday until it is removed after 6 days (Thursday). Her CGM doesn't have an insulin pump attached to it, so technically it cannot tell her what her sugar levels are real time unless we do the finger pricking glucose checking. This device is meant to help identify the trend of her sugar level, accompanied by her "extra special" diet (see previous post).

You can read more about CGM from the link below.

Zee has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). So what is it?

"Chronic kidney disease includes conditions that damage your kidneys and decrease their ability to keep you healthy by doing the jobs listed. If kidney disease gets worse, wastes can build to high levels in your blood and make you feel sick. You may develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage. Also, kidney disease increases your risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. These problems may happen slowly over a long period of time. Chronic kidney disease may be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders. Early detection and treatment can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse. When kidney disease progresses, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life."
