A Wheelchair for Simon

We're raising money to help buy wheelchairs for Simon and the Whizz Kidz because they need some help to get around!

Our crowdfund has passed the £500 mark - so all new donations are now going straight to Whizz Kidz, helping to buy a wheelchair for a disabled child in need.

TrekFest Challenge 2015

I'm taking the TrekFest challenge this year, a stunning walk of 13 miles in 6 hours through the UK Peak District on 5th September, to raise money for a new wheelchair for my husband Simon and to support disabled children in the UK. Simon has cerebral palsy, a lifelong disability that affects muscle control and movement. TrekFest is a sponsored walk for charity, and any money I raise above £500 will go to Whizz Kidz, who work to transform the lives of disabled children by providing vital equipment, support, and life skills they need to reach their potential.

Why is this important?

Much as Simon doesn't like to admit it, he is finding it more difficult to get around these days and needs to use the wheel-based alternative more often. To do so, he needs a decent new wheelchair that is actually fit for purpose. The one that he has is too big and heavy to get in and out of the car on his own, and a new wheelchair that will really fit his long-term needs costs about £1500. This made us think about how many disabled children don't have access to the proper equipment. We would like to do something to help change that.

How will the money be spent?

£500 will be spent directly on buying a mid-range 'Quickie' wheelchair for Simon, and everything over that amount will go to support Whizz Kids. Find out more about them here! http://www.whizz-kidz.org.uk/

I'm a Texan-Finn living in the UK in Oxford since 2007. My life has been so enriched by my wonderful family and by my husband, who is by turns brilliant, loving, thoughtful, so compassionate, and happens to be disabled. Join me to make a great new wheelchair possible for Simon!
