About us

The Myanmar Community at NUS is organizing this fundraiser to help refugees and internally displaced families arising from recent conflict within Myanmar, in support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) - the UN Refugee Agency.

A voice from the ground

“I never imagined that this would happen to me. Before, my family was living happily in our village. Now, I’ve lost everything except my children.”

Anna Ruth* with her children outside the monastery in Shan State where she sought shelter after being displaced multiple times in Kayah State. (*Name changed for protection reasons)

Anna Ruth*, a mother of four children from Myanmar’s far eastern state of Kayah, vividly recalled the day she and her family had to leave their home on the day clashes between armed groups reached their village.

Together with other villagers, Anna’s family was forced to flee to the nearby forest to hide without any hint of another great misfortune that was about to befall on her. One evening, while taking refuge in the forest, she realised that her husband was not with their neighbours who returned from gathering food and essentials at their village. He was shot while he was collecting essentials at their house. Anna was devastated to learn of the loss of her husband. “We have been running since June 2021,” Anna recounted.

This story is not Anna’s alone.

This tragic experience has been shared by thousands of families in Myanmar due to renewed conflicts in the country. Since February 1, 2021, escalated armed clashes, air strikes, shelling and burning of villages have triggered an increased civilian casualties, large-scale displacements within Myanmar and taking of refuge in neighbouring countries. People have been forced to flee from their homes for their own safety and security.

As of 31 January 2022, there has been a record high of 812,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) within Myanmar. UNHCR has estimated a requirement of $109 million for 2 million IDPs and refugees in Myanmar in which $73.2 million is for food security alone.

Let’s help Myanmar together. With the efforts of you and I together, we can make a difference to help alleviate the suffering of the people of Myanmar. All donations, big or small are welcome!

Where will your donations go?

  • SGD $156.50 could provide a one-off package of cash assistance to meet the basic needs of a person living with disabilities
  • SGD $180 provides a family with emergency shelter and non-food items to meet their domestic needs during displacement
