A TygerMatie in MBChB II Needs Us!

Hey all - It's Caroline, your vice class representative for MBChB II, 2017.

As you all know, our class is dynamic. It's full of the smartest, most passionate, driven and incredibly interesting people I've ever had the great pleasure of meeting. You all have spent a solid year warming my heart, keeping me entertained and enthused about medicine, and challenging so many of my perspectives - you all have taken the time to teach me many things, and I'm thankful to you all.

All of us come from vastly different walks of life, but our experience of comraderie and collaboration that is the MBChB curriculum, unites us - without you all, I wouldn'tve made it this far, and I will spend the next 5 years leaning on you, studying with you, debriefing with you - then I'll spend many years as a junior doctor whatsapping you and conferring with you, referring patients and bouncing ideas back and forth. Our class is a new home for all of the struggle and incredible hardship we have ahead of us - the difficult times as well as the celebrations and the victories we will all face.

So why am I writing this? Because one of our classmates, someone I (and many others) have leaned on already, someone who has brought so much joy to my days in the dissection hall and has taught me concepts I was slow to grasp, who has cheered me on through exams and laughed with me through trials (ahem that clinical med final), is facing exclusion.

He's facing exclusion because he was denied bursaries and funding, isn't eligible for loans. And he's denied his funding for MBChB I, which he's already passed, and now owes as debt to the university before he can even register for MBChB II.

He is sitting with this information while writing our Resp exams with us. He's been calling and advocating and applying for his funding this whole time, only to be rejected for the most illegitimate of reasons (which I won't share with you, because it will give away his identity, but trust me, it's not like his grades aren't excellent, it's not like he doesn't deserve to be here - he does. HE REALLY DESERVES TO BE HERE.)

So he owes 40,000 that he needs to get before the end of Resp, and that will cover his debt from last year. The additional funds would be what he owes for 2017.

If we got the members of our class each to contribute, it would only cost about 130 rand for each of us.

130 Rand so that our classmate can sit our end of block.
