Campaign Story
A TALE OF LOVE, SPICE AND HEARTBURN
I’ve had a lifelong love of spice and with that comes a fair amount of heartburn. The magic of Zillies Chillies hot sauce has helped improve the lives of women farmers and their families in Malawi(Southern Africa) for years. It all started when I was 6 years old when my dad was diagnosed with hypertension. To cut out salt and sugar he turned to spicy food and so did daddy’s little girl. That’s how we both became chilli addicts
I love that my Dad started this chilli love & people story with me. With the encouragement of friends and Dads love gift of $5,000 investment in 2014, Zillies Chillies has become a social enterprise that sells sauce through trade markets, directly to restaurants and from our flag ship Koko Bean Café in Lilongwe, Malawi, where it is made. Zillies provides annual farm inputs (seed, financial training and support) and buys the harvest(chilli and spices) from women farmers of Njati Women’s Cooperative founded by my parents when they retired. Zillies also links girls with role models for mentoring, provides reusable sanitary pads and school fees for girls in rural secondary schools.
Zillies Chillies is an artisanal food, spice and chilli sauce company. The hot sauce comes in 3 flavours Maya Fruity, Kambuzi and Roast Garlic & Red Onion. There’s an army of over 120 amazing and inspiring artisans in the Zillies farmer family who grow Chillies, Macadamia nuts, coffee and spices. Bertha is a 26 year mother of 4 children who courageously left an abusive marriage and by working as a processor at Zillies, Bertha is now able to self-sufficiently care for her family and their education. Zillies doesn’t just make chilli, it changes lives.
WHAT DO WE NEED?
Zillies has invested $14,333.00 to secure the new property (Zillies processing factory in the new Koko Bean Café) and renovate half way to completion. The factory’s processing equipment has been acquired. The unit needs $12,000.00 to complete the renovations and begin commercial production. The new unit will lead to Malawi Bureau of Standards & export certification, increased production by farmers and in processing. Zillies will be in stores nationwide by November. I love giving more to our ever growing community. Through this project we will help 120 to 200 women farmers, provide 5 university scholarships and fees for up to 24 secondary schools for girls. It will also empower people through employment.
For interested supporters, anywhere in the world I will send you a package of the first batch of Zillies Chillies ‘Spice of Love’ special edition and put a photo of you and the sauce on ‘The Great Wall of Chilli’ in the cafe as a token of our deep gratitude. I am happy to answer your questions and talk about our plans. Please contact me [email protected] and on Facebook Zillies Chillies.
