Lets save some lives

(An initiative agaist Killer Stoves of India) High blood pressure (BP) has become the world's deadliest disease-causing risk factor. But for Indians, indoor air pollution (IAP) — emanating from chulhas burning wood, coal and animal dung as fuel — has been found to be a bigger health hazard for Indians.

The first-ever estimates of the contribution of different risk factors to the global burden of disease between 1990 and 2010 has found that household air pollution from solid fuels have risen from being the second highest risk factor for Indians. The World Health Organization (WHO) had said that IAP was claiming 500,000 lives in India every year, most of whom were women and children.

According to WHO, India accounted for 80% of the 600,000 premature deaths that occur in south-east Asia annually due to exposure to IAP. Nearly 70% of rural households in India don't even have ventilation.  WHO estimates that pollution levels in rural Indian kitchens are 30 times higher than recommended levels and six times higher than air pollution levels found in the national Capital.

According to the study, in 2010, globally the two most important risk factors were high BP — estimated to be responsible for 9.4 million deaths — and tobacco smoking (accounted for 6.3 million deaths). In 1990, the second ranked risk factor was household air pollution from solid fuel use — responsible for 4.4 million deaths in 1990 — and although this had dropped to fourth place in 2010, it was still responsible for 3.5 million mortalities. With the exception of house hold air pollution, which is a significant contributor to childhood lower respiratory tract infections, the five leading risk factors in 2010 (high blood pressure, tobacco smoking including secondhand smoke, alcohol use, household air pollution, and diets low in fruits) are mainly causes of adult chronic disease, especially cardio vascular ailments and cancers.

400,000 children and 34,000 women are killed each year from exposure to smoke from cook stoves, according to an estimate published in the journal PNAS in 2000.

Smoke causes cateract and ligh INHALATION of cigarette and chulha smoke could be a major cause of Indians developing cataract sooner than people in the developed world.

Scientists V K Shalini, Mani Luthra and D Balasubramanium of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) at Hyderabad and Leela Srinivas from the Food Technology Research Institute in Mysore say smoke from cigarettes and chulhas hastens cataract formation.

Exposure to household air pollutants released during cooking has been linked to numerous adverse health outcomes among residents of rural areas in low-income countries. Improved cookstoves are one of few available interventions, but achieving equity in cookstove access has been challenging. Therefore, innovative approaches are needed.

The Problem

We were shocked to see the dreadful facts about this killing Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) smoke that comes from the traditional stove. You also will be surprised to know the following fact sheet. High blood pressure (BP) has become the world's deadliest disease-causing risk factor. But for Indians, indoor air pollution (IAP) — emanating from (chulhas) burning wood, coal and animal dung as fuel — has been found to be a bigger health hazard for Indians.

After knowing the facts we took an oath to aware and save these innocent children & women from this killer smoke and we also request you to lend a hand of life to these poor & deprived community people.

The Solution

There are many solutions to replace the old stoves with LPG stoves, kerosene based stoves, solar Stoves etc. but none of these are sustainable. The community that we are going to target is below poverty line and they can`t afford any of the above fuel. They collect fire-food, cow dung patties for cooking by their traditional stoves.

This Smokeless Stove is a low-tech solution to enable healthy indoor cooking. This stove has been developed to fight the ill-effects of indoor air-pollution, a silent threat that is the cause of respiratory problems in many rural households of India.

The Improved Cooking Stove has many advantages over traditional stoves. Apart from providing a better cooking environment, the stove is easy to use and maintain, and can be used with indigenous biomass as fuel. As the stove is locally produced and distributed, it is relatively cheap and easily available. The stove production uses local materials and processes, and also allows for easy installation. The foremost benefits of the Improved Stove is that it provides a safer home environment for families, reduces the risk of respiratory illness, and supports indigenous fuels and ways of cooking.

What We Need & What You Get

To replace the old stoves by the new ICS in the village, we need $152000. With this fund we will be able to cover around 2000 families. This fund will save around 12000 innocent lives of children & women.

The expense on one family would be $76 that will cover the following;

  • A New Improved Cooking Stove
  • Dismantling the old Stove
  • Training to the Women ‘How to use’
  • 3 years of maintenance

Project development & operational expenses would be following;

  • Purchase/Building the Improved Cooking Stoves
  • Human resource for survey, installment
  • Training & development of women
  • Stationery & equipments
  • 3 Years of maintenance contract
  • Supervision & administration
  • Other Expences

To motivate the funders to support this unique & innovative project we have divided the total fund into the following perks. If we get less fund than desired?

The average price for installing one improved stove to one family including the 3 years of maintenance would cost around $ 76. So if we get less we will cover less, we will try to raise funds from other sources.

If we get exact fund we desired?

An achievement not only for us but also for you, to support in building first 'A Smokeless Village' in India. If we are lucky and we get the exact fund, we can proudly save one entire village from the killer stove & smoke. We would be able to save around 12000 lives from deadly diseases and untimely deaths. From the fund we will install the ICS into 2000 BPL (Below Poverty Line) households.

If we get extra fund than we desired?

Fingers crossed!! If we get some extra funds, we will try to install more Improved stoves in nearby areas of the village. More Funds, More Improved Stoves!! More' 'Smokeless Villages' (Eco Village) More Improved Stoves, More Lives!!

The Impact

By contributing every penny you will feel like a savior and yes!! Indeed you are a savior. We have the plan to implement but without funds the plans are not worthy. So by contributing into this project will not only help the poor families by pre-mature deaths but also it will cut some cost in fire-wood & cow dung cakes and will help in global warming too. The major impact in terms of statistical data are as follows:

  • Saves More than 12000 lives
  • Creates 'A Smokeless Village'
  • Contributing in Reduction of Smoke causing Global Warming
  • Saves premature deaths
  • Saves people from smoke generated diseases
  • Provide temporary Employment to some people in installing new ICS
  • Happy & smiley faces Low maintenance of the new ICS
