A school in Cambodia

The Plan

My name is Leonardo, I’m a 23 year-old-student and in August 2017 I’m going to Cambodia. There I will be volunteering as an English teacher in the Rural School Organisation-Cambodia. With this crowdfunding project, I would like to collect enough money to help the organisation building a library. The library project has already started, we need 3000 € to finish it as soon as possible. Any donation could be helpful! To thank all the people that will contribute to this project I’m going to film my experience and to make a video that I will share with everyone when I come back home.

About the school

Rural School Organisation-Cambodia is located in Thnol Trong Village, Bakong Commune, Bakong District, Siem Reap Province, just outside of Siem Reap town. The school, which is a non-profit organisation, was opened in 2013 by Mr Poeuy Tith.

The school offers free education to nearly two hundred impoverished children and young adults of the Bakong community, many of whom are not able to attend school otherwise because their families cannot afford the related costs. Classes at the school focus heavily on teaching English as a second language.

Challenges

The Thnol Trong Village is home to the Bakong community. Many of the village’s children have lost one or both of their parents. Many of them lost their fathers while they served in the army. The most prevalent illnesses in the community are malnutrition, HIV, hepatitis, typhoid, tuberculosis and dengue fever.

Rice water and salt supplemented by the collection of frogs and red ants is the staple diet for many of the children in the Bakong community. Mothers are often unable to produce milk for their babies and are forced to feed them only with the water from boiled rice.

Vision

Cambodia depends on tourism which provides a great number of future employment opportunities. For a career within the tourist industry, or for many outside of it, English is essential.

RSOC believes that every child has the right to free, high-quality education. A good education enables children and young adults to develop the essential skills they need to make positive changes in their lives and to break free from poverty.

The school provides a secure and happy environment for the children it serves. Children follow a consistent curriculum with a clear learning path. English speaking volunteers give students an opportunity to learn English as effectively as possible.
