Introduction

Are you a Second Life Resident? If so, this cause may interest you, especially if you're a long-time Resident like myself. Even if you've never heard of SL, your help is greatly appreciated. Allow me to explain.

Purpose

Not only will this business help many of the people who use Second Life, but I am also hoping it will help me in my search for a better job in the real world. The purpose of the fundraiser is to save up enough money to create a web site. I am confident that once it catches on, it will make people's lives in SL easier and more fun. I can also use this web site as part of a portfolio to show to possible employers, as it is my goal to be a web designer or developer. Since the site will include such features as a log-in system, profile editor, search engine, and reading/writing to a database, it will be an excellent example of my skills.

What is Second Life?

In a nutshell, it's a vast virtual world in which you create a customisable avatar, meet others from around the world, hang out, chat, play games, and so much more. It's free to join but if you want to purchase goods and services from other members (Residents), you will need to acquire L$ (Linden Dollars). There are several ways to do this, including buying them with real money or simply selling in-world items to others. A common way to acquire L$ if you can't buy them is to attend events, especially those that have contests.

The Problem

Second Life's event system is rather lacking. You enter a title, date, time, location, and a description. That's it. Not very exciting, right? Most people don't mention details like dress code, contests, music genre, and so on. You don't have an easy way of knowing how popular the place is or how friendly the staff is. You certainly can't leave your own personal reviews on the places you visit.

The Solution

I've come up with ideas for a site that will allow people to do all of these things and much more. Members will get to create a profile that includes their interests, which will make finding events a lot easier. A search feature will let members find exactly what they're looking for, whether it be a certain club or store, or a specific type of event during the hours they are able to be on Second Life. There will also be a rating and review system for anyone wishing to offer an opinion, or up- or down-vote a given place based on their experiences there.

What's the Catch?

If you'll be using this site just to find places and events, there isn't one! Joining is and always will be absolutely free! However, maintaining a web site and an in-world store are not free. Therefore, I must offset the costs somehow. There will be a small fee to submit an event, for a couple of reasons. The first being helping me cover the expenses. Another big reason is that these events will be getting advertised to hundreds if not thousands of people using the site. It doesn't seem like much to ask for a little something in return.

What Does this Involve?

When the site launches, exposure will be minimal at first, obviously. I will keep the submission fee rock-bottom for a while. It seems only fair. Members will not pay for event submissions with L$ directly, though. Instead, they will use L$ to purchase a special currency that gets used on the site. Kind of like how you buy tokens to use in Facebook games. Not only will this currency be used to submit events, but to get them more attention as well. You may also send some or all of your currency to other members as a gift.

Additional Features

You will be pleased to know that you can optionally have the site e-mail you with weekly and monthly updates on upcoming events, big and small. You'll also have the option of being notified in-world when an event you want to attend is about to start. I have a lot more in store, and I'd love to mention it all here, but I don't want to make this too long or spoil some of the surprises.

My Thanks to You

I am including a little something extra for those that donate. If you are in Second Life, and plan to sign up on the site when it's ready, I am more than happy to give you some free credits based on the amount you contribute. It's the least I can do to show my appreciation. You will need to let me know your avatar name after you've made a donation.

In Closing...

I thank you for taking the time to read over my ideas and my goals. This is more than just a fun little project for helping fellow Residents. This could very well help me in getting the kind of job I've always dreamed about. Please share this with friends and family, especially those that are in Second Life.
