A new beginning for Adri

Hello everyone!

I am Brenda and I have created this campaign for my sister, Adriana Rodriguez. We are from Peru and she is 25 years old. Unfortunately, one year ago her life changed completely. She went to the doctor for an endoscopy and a esophagus dilation, sadly, her esophagus was perforated during that common procedure. Due to a late diagnosis and treatment she got really sick. She had respiratory failure and septic shock due to a mediastinits (a very strong infection). After 5 days all her body started to fail and she had an emergency surgery to save her life: A bilateral thoracotomy. After one month in ICU, and despite the bad prognosis of the doctors, she survived. To seal the perforation doctors tried to use esophageal stents three different times but they did not work and her esophagus became more damaged and gradually the stricture close it completely. She was hospitalised more than 6 months and since then she has been receiving nutrition through her vein (parenteral nutrition). She was unable to eat at all for more than 6 months. Doctors said that her chances to eat again were really low. They said she needed a surgery but they did not want to do it for 2 reasons: 1. It was too risky because she had already a major and complicated surgery in the same area of the body and 2. They did not have experience doing that specific surgery because her case was unique. So they told her that she will need a jejunostomy to be feed through the abdomen all her life.
Adri was devastated so we decided to look for other options and opinions.
We found a couple of surgeons who did a similar procedure before.They work in a private clinic in Lima and Adri does not have insurance there, so me and my family took up loans to pay almost 30,000 USD for the surgery and an hospitalisation of 10 days. The surgery was on Jan 6th, however, Adri had an infection after the surgery and she is still hospitalised.

The surgery was successful and after more than 6 months she is able to eat again, even though her diet is quite poor (just liquids and mashed potatoes and veggies) she is the happiest person in the world.
The infection is gone now and she will be discharged soon, after one month and we do not have the money to pay for the extra remaining days of hospitalisation which are around 8,000 USD since we are already struggling to pay the loans.
Adriana is definitely starting a new life and I want her to enjoy it finally out of hospitals,surgeries and medical procedures without feeling like if her disease was a burden for our family.
