SInce November 2017, we established a protective apartment for homeless teenagers and unaccompanied children that ended up alone in Greece, providing safe accommodation, nutrition and daily activities that nourish their healthy growth and self-reliance.
Furthermore, every week we are
cooking together for all and supporting people out of social exclusion and
isolation. Based on food and the relations that form throughout the food cycle (from seeding, cultivation, crop collection, processing and cooking, to reclaiming and re-processing food that would be wasted), we create public democratic spaces, kitchens and urban gardens with people from local communities, who come together into groups with common concerns and interests to develop creative activities and social actions.
Community cooking provides the foundation for social
cooperation and solidarity. Every Friday, a group of locals and refugees cook together around 100 portions of hot food for homeless and people in need. For 2018, we prepared approx. 4000 hot meals and wish to involve more people and prepare more food, more days every week.
For our cooking ingredients we are reclaiming food,by collecting products that are expiring and dry food in faulty packing that markets can’t sell as well as fruits, vegetables and fish that otherwise would be dumped. By forming a “social cooperative chain” these products are gathered, processed, re-packed or cooked into hot meals and distributed to homeless and people in need. For 2018, we received and processed an estimated quantity of 10 tons of food that would go wasted. We would like this social cooperative chain to expand and make full use of the growing network of “food waste” donations.
We are running a social space and community meeting place in Thessaloniki which is also the base for our cooking and food processing activities. Over the years we are seeing our community expanding and becoming stronger and more diverse. Our community is a point of reference for social innovation and cooperation, a space where needs, wasted resources and ideas are uniting people into dynamic and creative social actions.
Ethos in Thessaloniki is a registered voluntary humanitarian association of people that are actively involved with the humanitarian challenges of the crisis in Greece. We are non-profit and sustained economically by our members, volunteers, friends and supporters who commit their personal time and resources in developing our activities.
