We are hoping to raise funds to secure suitable rented accommodation for our friend Rahina and her two children (6 & 10). Rahina has faced almost insurmountable challenges over the past year since losing her home and the situation has become critical. She is facing homelessness. All funds raised through this page will be donated towards securing accommodation for the family (a one month deposit and one month’s rent in advance).

----

In July 2014, Rahina was evicted from her flat in Hackney, east London after losing the job she had worked in for 11 years. A single mother with two young children she has been at the mercy of local authorities. With no access to benefits due to her immigration status, she was reliant on assistance from Hackney Council, who provided her with temporary accommodation, one room for the three of them, in Southend-on-sea and subsistence allowance of £67.40 per fortnight to survive on.

Once Rahina was technically able to access benefits, the temporary accommodation was withdrawn, leaving her and her children without anywhere to live. She was then forced to seek help from Southend council who up until Monday 18 May had provided emergency accommodation in a hostel. Concluding that, having lost her job, she had therefore made herself ’voluntarily homeless’, she was asked to leave.

Rahina’s story was featured local newspaper the Hackney Citizen, see here - http://hackneycitizen.co.uk/2014/08/07/hackney-mot...For more background on the problems facing people with ’No Recourse to Public Funds’ status see here - http://hackneycitizen.co.uk/2015/04/07/charities-u...
